Adavnce Retard Units

#1 PostAuthor: SP10mk11 » Mon May 19, 2008 4:55 pm

Thorugh all my ramblings, endless questions and experiments to get my Z1R to run properly, I think I have at last found the reason why it has an off idle stutter.

Today I was going to re-fit the points because i was suspicous that the timing wasnt correct with the Z1000 mk11 electronic ignition i had fitted.

So i am reading the Clymer book about how to do it and i noticed a picture of the advance retard unit, this had a number on it "1009" and I then noticed that that the number on the advance retard i was using said "1003" (this came with my bike), a quick check in the Zpower book shows the unit for the Z1000 A1/A2 and the Z1R are two different part numbers, so i am thinking could they be two different type of units and this be a possible cause of my timing problem

So I swapped the units around and leaving the mk11 electronic ignition in and tried it, and it now pulls away without stuttering, revs more cleanly and has even better poke, fook me im too scared to accept that this has been the problem all along, but i have been out testing testing...........and it is great.......... :D

I do not know what the difference is between the two units is but i am still coming too terms with the fact that i have not got too slip the clutch and rev the engine too pull away cleanly now..................KIN ELL !

I dont know I just Dont Know :??

but hey ho!

If anyone knows the differences then i would gladly like to know

Hello Gary, yes the different timing units will position the crank triggers differently, by checking the timing with a degree wheel you can fit any timing unit, just do not rely on the timing marks, Regards, Steve

Hello Steve

Thankyou Sooooooooooooooo much for that information...........

The kwak ignition system is fixed but with a bit of drilling and filing i could move the mounting plate, but on the other hand i want to bask in its workingness for a while.

This has driven me mad for the past 2 1/2 years........

If i had a cigar i would smoke it nice and slowwwww

Thanks again
Gary

Just to say I bought a KZ 900 yrs ago and it just wouldn`t do the full rev range?....Swopped this changed that....no better? Y`man Buzzard took a look and noticed the obvious, wrong advance / retard unit, ooopps!
Swopped it over ,and BINGO,DEEPJOY!
Always wondered if this was restriction U.S style? [ 55mph limit].
Any one else had similar prob`?

There are differences between early Z9's but that was only the low rev (idle) advance which was changed. The fully advanced figure should be around 40 degs.
Thats why its best to degree the timing statically at fully advanced so you know what it is, rather than relying on the factory markings
