Z1R airbox?

Z1R airbox?
have just taken the pod filters off,as it wouldnt run right,and fitted the original airbox....runs much better,but the airbox doesnt seem complete,there is something called a silencer box? that is missing.What does it do...and do i need it?Thanks all.

They were fitted with airbox silencers which in the main were removed early in the bike's life and are as rare as rocking horse shit. They served little purpose and only those who want 100% originality are prepared to pay through the nose for them. They don't make an iota of difference to the engines performance. I would however, never run a zed without standard airbox unless I really couldn't get one as the engine will run much better with a proper airbox, despite the claims of Mr K&N and Mrs S&B!!

There is the main air box and lid complete with filter, internal mesh gauzes(removable to clean) and the rubber hosing to the carbs.(if these are not pliable,junk them and get some new uns helps removal/fitment)
Connecting to the back of this,is a "T" shape. One end with 2 holes,the other a larger diameter that connects to the back of the main air box.
Fastened with a large "jubilee clip" and a M6 bolt complete with a "penny lock/spring washer(s)

Thanks for replies vduk+Ed,so far have new points+condenser,spark plugs,Timing done,carbs balanced and re-fitted the airbox with new rubbers.Rode it last night and although its much better starting,ticks over,sounds great etc,when i accelerate it sounds like its missing and bogs down......now i'm no mechanic but its either running rich(will check plugs later?)so the plugs are sooting-up....or its maybe some other timing prob....coils?.....something is stopping it from sparking enough?Im glad i can cross the airbox silencer off of the fault list though.Thanks again.

If you are running NGK plugs, bin 'em and stick in Nippon Densos which can be found at http://www.spark-plugs.co.ukThey are nice and cheap and the deliver 'em very quickly.
There have been many discussions about plugs on here and the indisputable fact is that NGKs have really gone down hill and loads of folk on here, myself included, have cured serious misfiring issues with a NGK > Denso plug change. I think they charge £1.15/plug.
I don't have any connection with the company other than being a customer so impressed with their service I was moved to send them an e-mail to that end.

Check the size of the main jets. should be 103 or 105 as std with the proper airbox. Chances are that bigger jets have been used to go with the non airbox setup of old. this will muck it up. On the subject of Z1Rs Im also refitting the airbox to my mk2. The main loom seems too tight where it goes from the base of the tank to the back of the airbox. Cant seem to route it in such a way as not to foul the filter cap . Is yours routed differently?
Kenny] Id agree with others the silencer seems to be of little use other than to stop your waterproof trousers getting sucked into the airbox as happened with mine when stored under the seat!
steve,i'm not sure what the make of airfilter is,it was in the airbox when i got it...have cleaned it and blown it through with an air line.....today i adjusted all the mixture screws,i guessed at 1-1/2 turns.....fired up like normal....pulled much better through the revs,so i guess this was the problem....although i havnt fully road tested it?bought a clymer manual off of a mate this evening and guess what?....the recomended idle mixture is 1-3/8 turns,so my guess was only an 8th out,ha ha.will adjust in the morning and book it in for an mot!!! christiemk2,am guessing the jets are fine,but thanks for your advice.my bike is a bit of a mess wiring wise,it has no fairing,indicators,original clocks etc,the loom has been split into two,and both parts pass around the frame on opposite sides.....and are hidden behind the side casings,thats not much help to you im afraid.I will be sorting mine out after the summer....just wanna ride it at the mo. 

ref vduk comments about plugs I think weve cleared them out ordered mine sunday they havnt arrived yet not like them thier pretty quick

if it is the paper type element what did you clean it with, if you rinsed it in any type of solvent then I would be fairly certain that the poor running is down to the filter, the standard type filters react badly to solvent and swell up which restricts air, Regards, Steveit was in the airbox when i got it...have cleaned it and blown it through with an air line
i was quite interested in the comments about Denso plugs.....and a bit confused as to how a plug could make that much difference?....soooo...after a bit of investigation Denso's cross-match number is w22esu(ngk b8es)......but my local motor factors cross reference book says w22esu = b7es,so they are a hotter plug n that is why.....?so keith0856 you could try ngk b7es if you cant get the Denso's? steve,my air filter isnt the paper one,will be changing it though anyway,thanks
