I've rebiult an engine but it has developed a very slight oil leak. It looks like it's coming from the cyclinder head where the odd shaped o ring is situated for the cam chain. It is at the front of the head. Any ideas why this has happened and what can i do to rectify the problem?

TRY TO TORQUE HEAD DOWN ONCE AGAIN IF NO LUCK THE CAM CHAIN TUNNEL GASKET MAY HAVE MOVED ON ASSEMBLY SO YOU WILL HAVE TO DISSMANTLE AND CHECK IT . IF IT HAS SLIPPED AND YOU HAVE NIPPED IT OUT OF SHAPE YOU MAY NEED TO REPLACE IT

Thanks Phil.....i'll try torquing the head again first. I hope the head does not have to come off again. If so, and if i did nip or not seat the o ring properly, then how do i make sure i don't do it again?

Hi guys,
perhaps i should have given a few more details first. The bike has been rebuilt and the engine first fired up a month or two ago. There has been slight issues since then and fair bit of fault finding, with the very much appreciated help of "custard cream" of southampton. Together we realised three shim clearances had no clearance(the learning curve here was these heads have to shimmed when torqued down and not on the bench). Once rectified we found a brand new set of condensors went down. The next fault was a brand new coil failure. The final fault was 17.5 pilots fitted instead of 15's. The bike now runs sweetly. The engine was only run for brief periods during the fault finding process and no oil leaks were found apart from the cam cover end plugs and the alternator cover(were the wires come through the rubber grommet). Now rectified. Now it has been running on the side stand for longer periods of time...but not too long. The weeping of oil has only just begun at the same time of longer running times. It does not appear to be coming from the tacho drive(all new seals etc). I am wondering if, as stated, the head needs re-torquing due to expansion and contraction with heat. If i had nipped the odd shaped o ring then surely this would have shown up during the short runs??....as did the oil pressure switch o ring, which i nipped when first started up months ago.

The cam chain tunnel 'o' ring was a nightmare when refitting my head. The bloody thing wasn't the right shape and kept jumping out. In the end I put some Wellseal into the groove and allowed it to go off a bit so it was more tacky and that just about did the job. Even still I was still poking things into the gap as the head was lowered into position to ensure the damn thing stayed in position. Had I not had a mate drive a considerable distance to help me, I would have been tempted to send it back to Z-Power with an uncharitable note.
