My starting problems were as follows.
First was a worn sprag clutch - The awful screech is easy to hear (now I know what it sounds like)
Second was the ignition - A new system sorted that.
Thirdly once I got it running the alternator output was insufficient - I changed the windings and the reg/rec.
The battery was good but I changed to a Motobatt anyway - Interestingly using a huge battery from a truck made no difference.
The starter was also probably good but I fitted a H**** one anyway - note the 438 embossed on the end. (Pic below) It is either necessary to chop out some of the sprocket cover or do away with it altogether when fitting one of these.
Also I got the fueling checked on my local Dyno. I was way off on the fuel screw. (Lesson here, follow the manual)

Check that all four screws that secure the choke lifters to the choke rail at the front of the carbs are tight, and in some cases are actually there! Common problem on Keihin CR carbs. On my Martin Z1, cold starting was a pig, until that was that three of the four screws were missing and only one choke valve was being lifted into position! The choke rail is at the front so easy check just lift the choke lever and make sure all four are working.
