No, most hold the field armature (the wires wound around the bits of metal) , which with the help of the iron lobes create a strong magnetic field.

More questions as I am sure they will crop up...
How do you go about cross referencing parts to see what other starters from other models fit.
Aaaaand can a starter be rewound I think that we used to be able to get car ones done what about bikes.
I am going on holiday tomorrow but will pass the link to this site on to my mate.

If H****a has a site where you can search parts diagrams then do it by part number, otherwise there should be the makers reference on the starter body.
