Need Some help - More carb trouble

I've been working on a Z1000 A1. It has some kind of after market pipe, which looks like a piper, maybe. Trouble is it runs like a pig, it wont idle despite sodding around with the pilot screws and balancing. Also taking it for a run, it runs smoother with the choke out, put the choke in and it wont pull, just feels like it's running out of fuel. However take the filters off, K & N, and it seems to run ok for a while, start getting into traffic it seems ok go to open it up and starts sodding around again. They are 26mm carbs no air corrector kit..

have you checked if the pilot and main jets are clear. had a similar problem , cleaned them out and replaced the fuel tap , now runs ok

Thanks bunnysz, gone through it with carb cleaner, however I thinkit needs more of the profesional approach, Ash owners going to let me know.

Mark the best way to clean carbs is to get them into an ultra-sonic cleaning tank,it gets them absolutely spotless.

2/ pilot jet outlet holes into venturi, air jets
3/ emulsion tubes

What voltage are you getting at the coils on tickover?

Every thing in that departments ok Rich, I think it could be as Ash has said, however I'm waiting for the owner to decide what he wants to do.

Mark have you had the tap out? A number of years ago I was having major problems after the bike was sittting for a while and no amount of arsing about with carbs seemed to be getting it sorted - turned out there was a load of crud accumulated around the gauze filter of the tap playing havoc with fuel flow.

I have a Z1000 A1 which had the same problem as yours.
I stripped cleaned and adjusted the carbs, checked the
fuel tank, lines and pet**. I also checked the electrics
and the ignition system. None of it resolved the problem.

It turned out to be the carb inlet rubbers, they had perished and were drawing in air, hence when I put the choke on it ran a bit better.
The rubbers didn't look that bad, perished a little on the
outside with no visible signs of it going any deeper.

The test I did was to spray them with brake cleaner while
the engine was idling, as soon as I did this the idling
speed picked up and the engine ran smoother until the
brake cleaner evaporated.

I replaced the rubbers with a new set from Zpower, bike is
now running great.

Thanks Chris, checked the fuel tap, no problem found, zedrob, Yes the rubbers do need replacing, but having swapped them with good ones just to find out if it was the problem, it still ran rough.
