Hi There

If you look at the third picture of this nice bike you can see what is likely to happen if you do not do a test fit of your pipes and stands before rebuild - the main stand is not parking anywhere near the rubber bung on silencer that is supposed to be holding it.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/KAWASAKI-Z1A- ... SwFEFXJhm1

This means that it is not being held clear under the bike as it should be - which could cause other issues.

You don't want to end up with that after all your work.

Thanks Paul,
Yep you are spot on about the rubber bung being for side stand.

But do you not think the foot lever for main stand is set a bit too low on that bike ??

I would not want to take a hard left bend with it there - unless I wanted to chamfer the end off.

On the reference pics I have seen the main stand foot lever is sat above side stand height when parked, only just below the long silencer hanger mount bolt.

When that side stand parks on the rubber it is going to be above the main stand lever - not below. Or have I got it wrong ??

You can see it on the mid pages in this brochure - and not quite so clear on the poster.

So, I used the clingfilm method of pipe protection, they were that well protected you could have spent a night safe and sound in Amsterdam. The new pipes do fit better and with the castle nut on the wrong way round there is still a 10 mm gap so we are good to go. Center stand lined up fine but the side stand was out by 10 mm just due to wear and gap expansion , so will either put a washer in or heat it up to close the gap. Now I can pull the whole bike down and get cracked on.

Well done.
from memory the side stand parking position can be put off point by:

retaining bolt has wear on pivot

wear on the flats on the stand

wear on the hole in the stand causing slack

a thin washer under the bolt head will cause it to nip up on the stand a bit tighter if it has worn loose

have a play and it might not need heating up at all.

make sure you do your test park with the spring fitted as that will pull it out by a few mm from the slack spot.

Oh and while you are on the side stand - don't forget the little foot lever is supposed to stick out at 90 degrees from the stand - have seen some mint zeds with droopy side stand levers

That's an easy job to straighten at this stage with a bit of heat.

Cheers
