Oil Pressure

#1 PostAuthor: relisysxx » Mon Mar 28, 2016 2:07 pm

Just filled my 'refreshed' motor with 10w40, should the oil light go out when spun over on the starter with the plugs out? or would the engine need to be started?
Thank in advance.................Nick

The oil light should go out after about 5 seconds of spinning over .

Nick,
It may take quite a time for the oil light to go out.
What engine is it?

Steve

If motor was stripped & drained of oil - can take a while spinning to get pressure up :!:

Take the end gallery plug out - just above points/clutch casing. See if it spurts out when cranked :??

Remember, they only run at just under 3 psi
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

Pour about a egg cup full of oil down the plug Piggy pointed out, give it half an hour and spin over with your thumb over the hole.

Nick,
Did you remember to fit the large diameter O ring inside the sump plate as this will not allow pressure to build.

mmm! Had a look in the box I put the gasket set in and low and behold there is a 'spare' large 'o'ring  , looks like I'd better order up a sump gasket!

Nick,
You should be able to use the same gasket.
The said O ring = 91mm diameter.

Just a thought Nick ! I know it looks possible now in fact probable that it,s the missing large sump O ring is the culprit (.... I'm not entirely convinced on this one, as I think it's likely permanently submerged, so in theory it shouldn't matter if it's not there - "but" then why bother with an O ring if thats the case ! )..... So, just in case the issue pursist's & your pump is securely fixed ,operative & has all the correct inline O rings in place . Well, it may be worth a quick Butchers Hook at the Oil pressure switch plunger too (behind barrels - White Plastic lump with the wire coming off it ) ....could be jammed to ground & the plunger not free floating against it's spring ...causing the light to stay on. Or, maybe the wire itself some where along the way .... is going to ground . I think you can maybe also at the same time.... back fill - prime the oil pump here..... by decanting say a pint of oil down this then open hole but "possibly not" as the Oil filter is on route this is affectively after the pump! & the paper element may not allow oil past it without a small degree of .....reverse pressure being applied. In reality though it doe's not really need priming !!!!! this because the pump intake is permanently submerged in oil, so a vacuum should automatically occur when the pump rotates. Good luck & happy Hunting ....... Johny Brando
