Clutch Basket

#1 PostAuthor: corky » Mon Jan 11, 2016 5:35 pm

Hi Guys I think I need a to replace the outer clutch basket on my 74 Z1 as the internal bore is .02mm under tolerance . Am reluctant to put it back on with new bearings and bush. The question is can the basket be refurbished? This will require the internal mounting bush being replaced, also the shock absorber springs can be turned in the basket, and when you lock the basket and try to turn the outer drive wheel it is relatively easy to move against the springs suggesting the springs are weak and may need replacing. Does anyone know if this can be done, and if so by who? I have been offered a replacement clutch from a Z100A1, is this the same as fitted to the z1? Thanks for any info.

Corky, nothing much goes wrong with this clutch basket, other then those radial springs (3 fine, 3 course). if they are loose or cracked they will rattle (this is known as "clutch rattle"). You can sometimes turn them in their mount, however, if there is no lateral movement they will do their job. They do make a kit to replace these springs ...... What a rotten job! You need three hands and a good set-up to do the springs with new oversize rivets.

Can't comment on the bush. I do know it is only active when the clutch is pulled in, hence, should not be subject to much wear.

Hi, what is the reason for your concern with the clutch Basket ...is it OK or is it noisey ...what exactly ? I presume you mean you have .02mm... that = under 1 thou of additional clearance in your Clutch baskets central mounting I/D. ( if so where did you get your I/D measurement from to assertain this additional clearance as there is no given service data on that ...that I can find in the 3 manuals I have. Even if this is correct..... I doubt there is a problem there as you'd need fitting & running clearance for the Needle Roller caged bearing there & that sounds fine to me ! But if you already have the the new bush & needle roller bearing ...if there's no sign of damage else where i.e. Clutch Plate Tabs running faces smooth & in spec & drive gear faces good, well you might as well fit them! Commonly there is almost NO issues ever encountered with these clutch baskets . If the running bearing face is smooth -uniform & no adverse signs of damage ...likely it's fine. The rear of the basket has the springs factory set in it...(to my knowledge these are not serviceable items ) the purpose of them is to act as a Cush Drive to reduce internal clutch loading forces & to help reduce the shock to the drive splines of the clutch & being able to rotate them is quite normal... but if there is horizontal free movement in them then I'd be tempted to switch baskets for the Z1000A1 one.... as I believe it will be a direct replacement . I'm sure your aware that almost all bikes including 900 Kawas will have a degree of Clutch Chatter & most ( not all of it ) will be greatly reduced when you pull the clutch in. This is quite normal but it can be greatly magnified by having especially your Carbs out of balance. I'f your concerns relate to this Clutch Chatter I'd fully service your engine first...& ensure you have good clean 20w 50 oil ....not 10 / 40 oil . Then LAST & most important of all Balance your carbs ( "after" first setting all the slides to exactly .7mm lift as per the shop manual ...) then using a quality set of 4 damped Vacuum gauges for the final fine balancing adjustment. Hope this of some assistance. Cheers Johny Brando.

Corky,
PM GEZ635 on here and he can offer a set of standard strength springs rather than the upgraded H.D items to refurb the basket.

PMC sell a genuine complete alloy complete clutch unit off the later GPz/J models, a direct replacement/upgrade for all earlier models. Quite reasonably priced for what you get! :)
