Starter Clutch Query - any clues ???

#1 PostAuthor: Tonto » Wed Aug 05, 2015 4:38 pm

Chaps - bit cheeky as its a Z1300 query - but its still a Zed  and any help greatly appreciated.
I've a gremlin with my starter clutch: fitted a new one 15 months ago, along with new gears, spacers, thrust washers etc. and all has been good - until last weekend.
The bike still starts on the button with no fuss or odd noises, but I am getting an intermittent noise from the starter motor, as if it's spinning up whilst I am riding in slow traffic.
Initially I thought it might be a dodgy starter button, until I took the alternator cover off: everything looked fine with no carnage to be seen - but the starter motor gear which should free wheel in one direction, would not free wheel, although it turned easily when the reduction gear turned it over. So I am hazarding a guess its the main gear not disengaging fom the reduction gear ?

Before I strip it down this weekend, has anybody comes across this before and can advise what would cause the starter clutch gear wheel to "nip-up"
Cheers Tim

could be one of the allen bolts in the clutch assembly come loose & pressing on the starter gear causing it not to free wheel . make sure you have got the spacer /shims in the correct positions

If the starter clutch is similar to the Z1 thru to z1000's. It could be as Z1Bman says. It could also be flats on the ground surface where the rollers run, causing the rollers to lose grip on the ground steel surface.

Have seen the same as Garn on a 650, entailed machining the surface true again...
