I have to change the clutch shaft to the longer version for a new clutch I have got. Is it possible to split the crankcase without taking the head and barrels off. Or can I get it out by just removing the sump?
Is fitting the longer shaft a straight swap?

If you mean the counter shaft that the clutch basket fits on then The crankcases have to be split I'm afraid but you can leave head and barrels on just remove all outer covers and inner trans mission cover ..

The later clutch is better designed and i have a lightened, polished and balanced clutch that needs fitting. The earlier shaft is shorter than the later model, so hence the reason that I am changing it . The engine is only half built so no big deal stripping it down.

If you end up with 3 or 4 mm of end float on the input shaft after a trial fit you will need to move the blind bearing cage to the RHS and probably 'bearing fit' it into position before tightening the two through bolts joining the CC halves at that location.
Are you changing the output shaft to do away with that stupid 'J only' type bolt fixing for the final drive sprocket?
Clutch push rod is longer etc etc etc.
Is that one of Alans' drilled / lightened clutches?

Al, it is one of his race clutches, got for an absolute bargain. The old one had wear from the plates on the hub and housing. I didn't even realise that there was two different versions as all the knackered ones and the z1000r one is the shorter version. So the fact that there is a different sprocket attachment is news as well.
