Found a nice surprise waiting for me while lifting the dust seals and removing the fork brace :no

well packed out with 'tissue' :shock:

the worst thing is, I was riding it about like that. With a full mot and receipt of seals being fitted :evil:

well it's definitely made my mind up to strip the forks completely.
I was hoping I could get away with leaving the legs intact,
but after seeing this and looking at a project by ralph with what he found in one :shock:

they can get a full strip.

I've got the 'sizing' of pics sorted.
after suggestions on here got the boy to alter the 'setting' on my phone/camera.
it looks like it works :up

The fork brace looks ok.
the bolts want replacing = slightly chewed up heads.
I don't know if it'll fit back on with a standard mudguard :?:

the dust seals look large (tall /high) compared to the 'brochure' photo :??

I think this is something to re - look at another day.
the brace says "B2" cast on it, don't know if this is relevant.
And if it is going back on, would you leave it black or polish it :?:

well you know whichever way, it'll get its turn in the blaster :twisted:

I have a micron brace fitted to my 1100, and it fits fine with the standard mudguard

I think yours being black finish may be for a GPz1100. B2

Finish wise, I would go plain alloy to match the bike.But body colour to match the mudguard may look good.

Removed the 2 locking nuts on the front wheel

Undid the pinch nut/bolt for the spindle

pulled out the spindle

Removed the spacer

removed the speedo drive

Removed the 14 bolts holding on the discs

The forks have a air balance pipe fitted (not that the forks were holding any with them fork seals :shock:

)

it's probably seen better days

, but I think if I just change the actual pipe it'll be all good :wink:

a small hole is in each fork leg to allow the air to level out under pressure :??

the whole balance pipe set up is held in place by the bottom yoke (stops it dropping lower)
And what I can only describe as a pair of 'glorified jubilee clips', (which stop it rising up the
forks),that clamp tight to the fork leg and thus holding the balance pipe over the holes

Taking the forks to bits.
I had to get a big bar /extender to get more leverage :shock:

the 22mm nuts /caps were definitely tight :evil:

their is evidence of previous abuse /ill fitting sockets :cry:

at a later date I might try to file 'em back to 20mm and clean the sides up in the process :wink:

removed the small springs and their locating washer and the locating washer for the main spring (I didn't want to fish it out of a bowl of oil later :roll:

)

Left the forks tipped up over a bowl to drain overnight ( smelly stuff that fork oil

)

tomorrow (monday) will be a busy day.
I've got the frame etc to pick up from the powder coaters

I've spoken yesterday to the guy from 'restoration supplies', clay cross.. He wants my engine casings, head, barrel etc for cleaning.( I'll check out his polishing while I'm there.)
2 weeks turnaround.
For vapour blasting, he says he can blast a 'complete' engine (you have to bung up all the orifices :shock:

)

Got the head back from 'mansfield engines'.
They did all marvel of things :shock:

, heli coiled it , re-seated the valves, did some 'drop test' ( the last tjme I did that it broke some fins off :lol:

), I was totally glazed over by now and my lack of knowledge had already left the building :oops:

I did get that they had welded up the ends (much needed) and due to valves being 'topped'?
and re ground, logging all the shim thicknesses etc was a waste of time?
I think I'll be studying the chrisu's 'shimming sticky' when the time comes and i'll also be a permanent thread starter in 'bike help' section :oops:

the ends wanted some serious grinding/attention, fortunately the end caps cover most of it.
a bit more 'sanding' will be required to give it a better shape:|
well the engine is definitely getting a thick coat of silver paint :lol:

I think the fork seals were superseded which may explain the tissue paper.
If buying new, get the later versions and probably not the aftermarket types you see on popular auction sites etc!!

The window in the master cylinder measures up as the same as the one in the clutch outer cover (from stuff in my shed).
If this is true you can push it out and push a new one back in. Its not under fluid pressure. I would buy one first and then look see.
Got mine from Zpower recently for clutch outer cover.
BTW its glass so be warned!

Have you got a small flower symbol on youre camera?
If so push it before you do close-ups i think its called a macro button or similar. It changes the focal length of the camera lens for 'near' work.

Most of the stuff you are finding; broken, bodged, booby trapped, rusted and seized is mostly standard, where every weak point in these bikes has been found at some point along the way. Depressing to find it but satisfying to fix.
Keep at it, its' going well.

I've ordered a 'glass window' and will see if it fits upon arrival :??

ps down to using the camera on my phone and although it may not be as good a quality for the viewer. It makes my side a dam sight easier.

When I've finished posting today, I think I've only got the carbs and seat that I can take to bits :shock:

the entire bike is stripped :hot

Back to stripping the forks.
I noticed that the fork legs had got different numbers stamped on them.
and for the eagle eyed amongst you :shock:

you'll notice different sized bolts that held the mudguard on. :cry:
