Think the stripe is about 5.5mm and the gap about 8mm. The reverse on the tail piece. My theory is that is because the tank was painted over white primer and the tail over the black plasti using a custom coach line masking tape. To me that makes sense but it's a contentious issue with claims of wide variation but every photo I have seen of original paint seems to look pretty consistent to me.
You can get yellow 5.5mm fine line tape from a guy in US who had it cut for yamaha's if he still has some. It does make a visible difference in relation to the gap in terms of the ratio. Search for jammy dog for 8mm tape although it's the paper type it's only for spacing your plastic line tape and is stripped off before spraying.

Steve, I was going to say the same as Glyn within + or - a smidge.

Here's something nice to listen to whilst you apply the tape.

There is some slight deviation from the mean, but it's neglegable.

On the tail the stripes are 8 mm the gap is 5.5. The stripes converge so that the centre is about 8 mm

I just measured the stripes on a 72 tail i use for my template and it's not uniform, but the stripes are about 8mm and the gap about 5mm. That's the reverse of the tank stripes. The center panel gets small until it's about the width of the outside stripe, maybe a bit wider. I'll put up a photo if my internet is installed later today.
The center orange panel is what's left I between the stripes you are masking. Bring the stripes closer together at the ends as I wrote above.
Are you going to spray a set?
