Is it a done thing that with a good solid 'click' at the solenoid but no life at the starter motor end, that my brushes need replacing?

try shorting the two contacts on top of the solenoid with a large screwdriver - if turns over solenoid is faulty just because it clicks doesn't mean it's ok= if --- doesn't turn over ( and you are sure battery is o.k ) then try a jump lead from battery positive direct to starter - if does'nt turn over check earth lead onto engine case by kick starter. if lead o.k then time to remove and strip starter for inspection -- sometimes the brushes stick in the guides -
