Wiring Help Z900...

Been putting together a Z900 this year and have got to the point were I think its ready to fire up.
When I turn on the ignition and hit the starter button nothing happens

I have tested the starter relay and when I turn the ignition on its getting power.

What would be the next thing you would check?

Sorry, I am a real novice when it comes to auto electrics...

check for power coming out of the other side of the relay to the starter motor,check for voltage at the starter

My voltmeter has gone on the blink so i've been using a basic circuit tester. When I turn the ignition on it shows power coming out the other side of the relay

ok check for power at the starter motor where the cable joins it,if you have power there but its not turning you need to remove it for inspection,provided there is not a mechanical problem stopping the engine from turning over

Ok.
I tested it at the starter motor where there is a bit of bare cable and it was good.
I will go and remove it now.

OK, I bench tested the starter motor and it appears be working fine.

When I tested the relay without the starter motor installed i'm not getting any power on the other side of the relay.

I did some further investigation and realised that when I turn the ignition on and earth my circuit tester, I can get it light up when I touch it against the engine block and covers.
What the fcks going on there?!?

Short across the large terminals on the relay with a pair of pliers.(insulated) if the motor turns over u have a duff relay or an issue with the low control wiring to it,if it doent turn over u have no power to the large wire going to the relay ,a broken wire to the motor or a duff motor breaking down under load of something mechnical stopping it turning over,your tester insnt one of the little neon jobs by any chance ? if so deposit in bin they are useless...Cheers Paul J

Thanks mate.
After some further investigation I figured I didn't have a good earth to the frame.
Now when I bridge the two terminals on relay it starts to turn over.

However, my new problem is every time I switch the key to the 'ON' position the fuse between the battery and the wiring harness blows instantly...

I've tried disconnecting parts of the harness to eliminate things but it still blows every time (been through about 10 glass fuses)

are you sure its an earth you have connected to the frame? earth is black with yellow trace

SOLVED!!!

Thanks for everyone's help.

The fuses were blowing so instantaneously that I thought something had to be earthing incorrectly.
Turns out when I replaced the coils I had inadvertently squashed the brown wire that runs to the horn between the coil and frame upon tightening.

I haven't even connected the horn yet which is why it got caught up without me noticing.
