Cam cover gasket

#1 PostAuthor: jacobmarley » Mon Dec 03, 2007 6:56 pm

Gents some advice please, I am going to check my valve clearances shortly and have a weep of oil from the cover gasket. Do I need a new gasket or could I use some liquid gasket( Hermatite?) to replace current gasket. What is your advice and experiences. - Jacobmarley (KZ1000 1979)

Fit a new gasket, they are only cheap in the big scheme of things, and look so much better than gasket seal.

At the end of the day it is up to you, but I personaly would fit a new gasket, especially as the old one is already leaking, if it was a fairly new gasket and has only been on there a short time I might re-use it as they do sometimes need re-torqueing after bedding in. :D ..but go on treat it its Christmas

I wouldn't just use a sealant, as the gaskets are quite thick, for a reason :|
If they were just paper gaskets, maybe, but cam gaskets being a couple of 'mm' thick, this must be to allow for a bit of movement and/or irregularity between surfaces. Don't want those cams rubbing the cover
I'd reuse the gasket if it seems quite intact and not hard or over-compressed, with a smear of sealant to be sure :P
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!
