As you will know from the piece I wrote in the last club magazine, we said we'd return and we did.
There's no need to go over again what the Belgian club do but suffice to say they work very hard to make everyone welcome and this year was no exception. In fact this was their tenth year.
Many of us know Patrick and his charming wife Ann. The other guys and girls in the club are just the same. Hospitable in the extreme and seemingly willing to go further than anyone else I have met to make everyone welcome.

Here is my story of the 2014 rally Belgium.

I have mentioned before that this year has been a bit barren for me on the Zed front. A combination, or perfect storm, of circumstances has contrived to limit my activities. This meeting though was never in any doubt.
The first thing that should be said for this rally is just how conveniently situated it is. The guys from the North managed, possibly, (apart from any shed riders) to get there on one tank of fuel. Even for us just North of London, it is only 300 miles. The journey itself isn't so interesting. Unless you count me making navigation errors that is  I have the excuse however that I use printed maps and the turning for the Paris motorway is metres from the turning to the ferry port at Calais where we were due to meet up with Scott. Anyway, a little detour cost us nothing except 12 times 1Euro 20. I had loads of change in my pocket and felt duty bound to sort it out.
180 miles on the motorway as I said is not so interesting but riding in a group of Zeds is always good.

We seem to have lost Mike Wheeler from this picture, perhaps he was in the shop? The journey this time was taken using the Brussels ring road which was much easier on a Friday afternoon than the Antwerp ring we used in 2012 especially as Mike had a 590 model SatNav.
Mike is due to join the forum as he has been having trouble joining up but is sorting this ASAP.

Eventually we arrived at the rally site after a total journey time of 12 hours. A total for me of 300 miles our delays were due to the train we should have taken was full. This lost us half an hour plus the wrong turn which lost us perhaps three quarters. There were no issues with the bikes at all.

A beer was pressed in to our hands as soon as we arrived and we greeted those friends we had made 2 years earlier or just a few weeks earlier at Blackpool. Scott and Mike found spots to erect their tents and we made our way the 2 miles to our hotel. I had booked 5 rooms which when we went to check in the receptionist couldn't find. I brought out the booking confirmation and could feel the others behind me plotting to take me outside for a good beating. Catching sight of the spreadsheet on the hotels computer I noticed she was looking at the wrong dates. Phew!
There is an underground car park at this hotel so we arranged an access key and parked up. We made sure there was space for the Norwegian part of our party who were arriving later.
A freshen up and we were in the bar like a shot.

Two of the three from Norway were in a different hotel a 15 minute walk away. We arranged for a table and sat back. Dinner consumed the waitress helped us with a taxi to take us to the rally site. I should add at this point that 2 years ago the arrangements for taxis were extortionate. It would have cost us 80 Euros or thereabouts but this time a minibus was arranged for 20. When the taxi pulled up the driver was very young. Bunny said "Are you the driver? Paul Mc owns some pants which are older than you" I lost it at that point and nearly bust my sides laughing. Bunny added "In fact he's wearing them this evening".
Kennet the driver was well tipped and promised to help us through the rest of the weekend. He even found some decent music to play for us. Good old Spotify.
I steered clear of the beer at the rally. Previous experience had taught me that it merely induces a cracking headache. Mike however was unaware of this fact. By 11.00 he was staggering around the marquee. I should leave this section of the story to him (hopefully he will be signed up soon and can put it in his own words) but suffice to say it got messy.
The band was good, very good actually. Loud though, even though there is a strict noise limit with recording devices to measure any breaches, with lots of classic covers. Some 200 people partied the night away.
For those of us lightweights an early night was in order and we left around 12. There is a bar back at the hotel after all.

A refreshing nights sleep and a good breakfast is always favourite. After breakfast we went for a stroll around the town. There is a wonderful chocolate shop where some of us made life difficult for the staff and some made life easy. We all bought some to take home for the wives anyway. Back at the hotel we ordered a coffee each and sat in the outside seating area. For 1 Euro 20 a decent coffee and 2 little pastries is a bargain. this also gave us a chance to catch uop with Roger who got up late and wait for the other 2 that were in the hotel 15 minutes away.
At the rally site we caught up with the night before events and as expected we didn't see Mike. A short while later we went on the rideout which was on decent roads and stopped halfway at the Albert Canal.
The video starts at the midway point due to my camera mounting method causing the camera to switch off. it seems cameras don't like Zed engine vibration over 3000 rpm.

Turn the sound down when watching this as the turbulence is unbearable and you won't be able to hear any engine noise anyway.

On our return we hung around as is usual but when judging still hadn't happened by 5 we made our way back to the hotel and arranged to walk down the 15 minutes to the other hotel for dinner.

Looks a great event Chris, I should have made this especially as I work near there in Germany. Just bought a hack for Germany so things should be easier (unfortunately not Kawasaki because I'm too tight to spend out for a commuter)

Mark.

If my knowledge of the German working pattern is anything to go by then you would have had no time off on the Friday.

If you're not so far and could ride on the Saturday you would be in company with many others from across the border.
