weak spark

#1 PostAuthor: stevie g » Sat Sep 06, 2014 4:13 pm

Hi Guys, OK I'm in the process of getting my CSR1000 on the road, Anyway I had the use of a set of Dyna Coils and with them fitted the bike would fire up no probs, but the guy has taken them back and I've fitted the standard ones back on, but it just will not start. I've also tried a set from a Zephyr 11 which I know are good, but still nothing. What could be causing my problem ? thanks in advance to all replies, $

Have you checked the basics, the wiring to the coils?
Tried new spark plugs?

Yea, Like I said, it was running OK with the dynas. I checked the voltage to the coils ages ago but cannot remember how you do it. Can you tell me me how to please ? Plugs are good as are caps, leads. It looks like a weak spark now compared to with the Dynas.

red wire at the coils should have same voltage as the battery 12 volts+ providing the battery is good?

Check both regulator, and rectifier? Clean all connections too.

Stevie,
If you can afford it buy a pair of Dyna coils and carryout the "Wired George"modification when fitting them.
Regards
Steve

I'm trying to do this damn bike on a small budget as it ain't my main bike, just a winter hack. So far i've bought a wiring harness, new airbox to carb rubbers, carb repair kits, tyres, clocks. the clocks and idiot lights, harness, reg/rec, pickups, IC igniter, all came from the USA from a guy I got in contact with through the KZrider forum, called Brian, he breaks Zs in New York. Very reasonable prices but get slaughtered with shipping and tax. I'm not really in a position to buy new Dynas anymore and I've almost had it with this F***ing bike. I've read something somewhere about re-powering coils, anyone know anything on this subject ? I wish one of you guys were up here to give me a hand, :( I've got a workshop manual which covers the Z1100 and the CSR so I'll take a look at checking the reg/rec and coils.

Stevie,
If the bike starts up with the Dyna coils

Then I would guess that the Zephyr coils are
A) not correct
B) You have the wires not connected correctly
C) Your original coils could be US

P.M. me your address & I will post up a good set of coils from a Z1000 ltd (1978)

If they work - Fine & Dandy - If not post them back. & SET FIRE TO THE BUGGER
