clock illumination wires are blue so if you have a spare it is probably down to this

yes they are in the main harness to the clocks. & it plugs into another block in the headlight. how many wires have you got connected to the blue wire with the double connector coming from the r/h switch ?

just had a look at the parts catologue and all the lamps from the clocks and idiot lamps plug into the same plug so it is strange that they are not working.
Just purchased a 1976 UK Z900 A4 for renovation. Wish me luck.

Find the blue wire that feeds the clock loom behind the headlamp, unplug it take a length of wire from the fed side of the clock loom direct to battery Positive and touch it on if you clocks light up you know the issue is between the lighting live and the connection you have just split

????? not sure. i have established that the handle bar earth is poor and that's why my horn don't work so maybe this is the problem with the clock light!

clock lights/ bulb holders have their own earths. bracket does not need to be earthed

Thank you all for your combined efforts to sort this and sort this we have.
All working perfect now. So the problem with the horn was as you all said, poor earth. Cleaned off powder coating to handlebar caps and the top bolt. Horn works perfect and very loud!
Clock lights was a lose connection. As soon as I took the front light lens off the clocks lit up. Not sure what was actually wrong but pushed all the connections in tight and could make them fail again.
So all back together.
