Dress to the left or right is of little consequence they dont work in either direction.
Put the manual one on and set up as you mentioned.
Have it a little tight to be safe and run the engine and loosen it immediately by hand listening to the change in sound and the feel of the chain as you do it.
Set the tension with the engine more cold than hot because if you set it hot when it cools down the chain will be too tight!

Ok I got the APE tensioner on, was hoping I could do it the lazy way without removing the carbs but there was no way! Hardest part was getting the carb to airbox rubbers back on. I adjusted as per the APE website instructions, finger tight and wind out 1/4 - 1/2 a turn. Did it with cold engine and then adjusted it by ear with it running. I think I have it about right. It's certainly improved from before, I have a phone video but no relevant account to upload it. Once the engine is warm it seems to be ok but there is still some noise there. Thanks to everyone for the help and advice, another job to cross off the list. Next is to sort the throttle assembly out, it's got a crap aftermarket one presumably because someone has rounded off the screw to get the switchgear apart. It's the reason the revs don't drop straight away.
