Valves

#1 PostAuthor: Wayne1960 » Sun Mar 30, 2014 6:26 am

Think I just messed up! Put all the valves back into the cylinder last night. Order of install was
Put new oil seal on to valve guide
Push valve into place
Drop the washer on top
Then the 2 springs
Then the washer
Compress
Split collars

I'm now thinking the first washer should have gone on before the oil seal
Was I right in the first place!!!!
Just purchased a 1976 UK Z900 A4 for renovation. Wish me luck.
Bike now finished what a joy!

Wayne, regret to say you have done it wrong way round.
After checking that the valve is able to come within range of the shims. ****

Insert lower washer over valve guide.
Push valve in place.
Carefully put oil seal on valve and check that it's spring circlip clicks into place.
Add both springs.
Add top washer and compress with valve compressor.
Slip in split collets and release valve compressor.

Yes, the first washer (spring seat) should have gone on before the stem seal.
Your seals will have been destroyed when fitting the springs.
You will have to whip it apart and fit new seals.

What a dick! I knew it when I woke up this morning. Ok so I've managed to strip it back down ad obviously the oil seals are trashed.
Lessons learnt and thanks for your help.

Just checking? When I pushing the oil seal over the valve stem does it go over the valve guide?

Wayne, if you have a close look at a valve guide, you will find a groove that holds the valve seal in place. Depending on the type of seals you are using, check that the small circlip/ spring-clip has not become separated from the seal as they are installed or retrieved.
