Air and pilot screws

#1 PostAuthor: mj66 » Mon Mar 17, 2014 7:35 pm

Hi folks. I have scanned previous posts trying to get info on this. I have just fitted newly refurbed standard 1000A1 engine in my 1000A2 :-)
She's running ok apart from a bit lumpy low down..... so ive static- set the dyna s ignition and was planning on having a go at balancing the carbs tom. night.( friends guages)
I THINK i have A2 carbs and was looking for the base settings for pilot and air screws.
The air screws are on the inlet /airbox side at about 3 or 9 oclock (L & right)...am I right in thinking 1 & 1/8th turns out ?
The pilot screws are at the front/ engine side of float bowls ..there are stops on the bowls but NO plastic limiters......so I have no idea how many turns out ?????
Was hopefully gonna get this sorted before balancing.
Thanx in advance for any forthcoming advice
:D

:?? Vacuum Balancing didn't go too well :(
Air & pilot screws were set, and as far as I could see the " mechanical " Synchronization gap was ok.....but I've got a BIG gap ? at the throttle stopper and cable bracket ..therefore eff all/minimal adj at idle adj screw...when adjusting the Vacuum guages via adj screws I got them close, but didn't have the Idle adjustment to slow it down  #3 carb was the worst and almost seemed to be doin the opposite from the other 3 !
Theres obviously summit wrong, and I'll investigate .....Nearly ready to throw in the towel ...
Is there a member on here that does carb checks / services if necessary or a reccomendable specialist shop
Just wanna run-in this engine :-(
Cheers the Noo,
Mark.

That big gap at the throttle stopper is the problem. Although the slides are synchronised, they must not leave a big gap when throttle is closed. This is usually a big job with the early Mikuni's however, yours should not be too hard.
If you can't adjust it at the cables/throttle stops, you may have to remove all the carb tops and adjust the highest slide down and bring the rest down to suit. Re-synchronise leaving all your idle adjusting set at 1-1/4 turns.

Also, check the vacuum balancing at 2500 rpm, as well as idle.
When I think I have the carbs pretty well balanced, I often swap vacuum tubes around a bit (but don't get confused) just to make sure the balance gauges are reading correctly.
