float height

hi all, does anybody know the measuement for the float to the carb body when setting it up on the bench, Gez 635 once told me but ive forgot it and he seems to have dissapeared off the radar......thanks

For the VM26ss carbs is the 22mm with the floats pushed down against the needle jet spring cuz mine all measure 25mm ish or 20mm ish pushed down. There is a lip on the lower carb face, is the measurement from there or the gasket face?

Mowjoe, the measurement should be from the surface (without gasket).
If the gasket is stuck on the surface the error will be less than 1/2 mm and that's well within tolerance.

Sorry to be a pain but I would have to bend the tangs quite a bit to acheive 22mm with it just resting on the spring pin and not pressing down. I'm at 20-21 now on all with the spring pin depressed and it was running ok apart from blocked pilot air holes on 1&2

Any ideas or should I just go for it with 22mm from the gasket surface not the Lip? Cheers mate!

Shite! Mowjoe, are you sure you have Mukuni "high top" carbs (26mm)?. It sounds like you may have 28mm carbs as with the Z1, Z1a and Z1b.
If the carbs are off the engine, check the diameter of the bore closest to the engine.should be closer to 26mm than 28mm.

Ensure you have the floats the correct way up!
ensure you have small washers under needle/ jet (petrol inlet}
Pilot jets should not be Blocked!.

Just re-read your first post.... The floats should NOT be pushed down against the tiny spring, they should just rest held down by their on weight (gravity), when upside down for measuring!

Better to use the manometer method, you can see what the levels actually are with setting with a measurement you cant tell the levels,i made mine up with some aquarium tube and a plastic screw in for the bottom of the bowl where the drain plug goes,cost pence...

Deffo VM26ss carbs! I took them off due to sooty plugs on 1&2 cyl and unable to set pilot mixture on them. I have found some sort off fibrous material blocking the pilot air holes!!! I have cleaned ,blown through with air line and fitted new carb kits so inlet needle jets are new inc washers. I have compromised and set floats at 24mm from gasket surface with floats hanging under their own weight. Re-fitted carbs and bike is running great. I will do a fuel in the tube check when I get more time but level must have been low before unless the inlet needle valves were a different make. By tne way this bike is new to me recently.

Where did you get the plastic screw thing to go into the float chamber ?
