Dyna ignition and coils problem
I have Dyna coils and Dyna S 2-1 ignition system on my z1000 A1. About 12mths ago the coil for cylinders 2&3 went down, no spark on 3. Replaced with a Denso off a GSX 1100 I had lying around. This lasted until a couple of weeks ago. Then that coil seem to go down, after it running as though there was a fuel blockage, but must have been the coil, no spark on cylinder no.3. Tried new spark plug, nothing. So replaced with the other Denso coil. This fired straight away. Job done !! Only the following week this coil literally melted !!!! Bought new dyna coil, no spark from 2&3 ???? Have I somehow buggered the Dyna S electronic ignition unit, (1&4 fine but nothing on 2&3) before I purchase another expensive item ???? Thoughts appreciated.
Cheers

Evans, before you do anything else, check your charging rate.
I would expect your voltage is not being regulated,
Simply, with motor running, check the voltage across the battery, Take the revs up to say 3500RPM and see if it reads >14.0volts.
Then look at whether you have the correct coils for the DynaS.
I have had a DynaS pick-up fail. But that's pretty unusual.

Ok will check charge across the battery, are you suggesting the regulator/rectifier is not working properly ?
I do have the correct Dyna coils for the Dyna S ignition, they are the DS1 green 3 ohm ones.
Regarding the GSX coils they are 3 ohm rated and I did have one working successfully for 18mths with no problems.

I think I need a new Dyna S !!!
I checked the Denso GSX 1100M coils that I have been uing on the 2&3 cylinder side and it apperas they must be compatible, as the replacement Dyna coils for that bike are the same as the ones for the Zed, DS-1, green 3 Ohm. So may be it was just a dodgy coil that shorted and cooked the module ???

Check the Dyna coil terminals ain't shorting on the support posts - also ensure they are not forced onto the mounting plate when tightened onto the bike - this can cause them to crack (the green body is weak).
As mentioned - leaving the ignition on can burn the Dyna pickups.
As for coils melting - not totally uncommon

And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

THIS HAPPENED TO ME FIRST WITH DYNA COILS, FIRST 2&3 WENT DOWN REPLACED COIL. NEXT WEEK 1&4 WENT DOWN. THE NEXT WEEK DYNA IGNITION PACK UP, NOW RUNNING STANDARD COILS AND BACK ON POINTS. CHECK THE BATTERY AND IT WAS VERY LOW, TOP UP WITH ELECTOLITE ACID AND ITS BEEN OK THE REGULATOR WAS NOT OVER CHARGING THE BATTERY
