Battery Sizing

#1 PostAuthor: LTD Project » Wed Nov 27, 2013 9:07 pm

Okay, got myself a special...... a GPZ1100 B1 engine in a custom frame with very little else on it (electrically) apart from the legalities of head lamp, tail and brake lamps.

So my problem is the bike has come without a battery and being a "special" has a limited space for a battery. Previous owner can't find any detail on the battery last fitted so I have no code to go with.

The battery sits in normal fashion across the frame and looking towards the front of the bike -ve terminal is rear left of the battery and +ve is rear right (Clear?)

The space available is YB14 for length and depth but is not deep enough for said YB14.

The YB 14 is 134L 89D 166H

My space is 134L 89D 150H

The original GPz1100 came with YB16 as standard I believe, but the strongest batteries that will fit the space available are YB10, giving 11Ah at best.

So to my questions. Would a YB10 start the engine reliably? Can anyone suggest a small but stronger battery model? Any other ideas at all?

Can supply pics if necessary.

Cheers

I have been using a Motobatt MBTX9U in the J.
It is 1170cc and high compression.
It starts the bike 10 or fifteen times a day no problem. From cold no problem and from hot too.
Its tiny and pretty cheap as it goes.

If you scroll down the MB catalogues it has all the sizes and output details listed.

Have you got fuel injection???

Superb, thanks Zorded. The MB10U looks spot on size wise. Much appreciated.
14.5 Ah as well. Hope that should do the job.

LTD,

I just love these technicaly challenging questions.

After giving it great thought, I have came up with this solution.

Fit an air compressor and an AIR STARTER.

Glad to have been of assistance.

What a timely post and answer! I was just about to ask a similar question. I need a battery for the Moto Martin. Space is limited and full size battery off the GPz too big. Needed a battery that will happily crank 1170cc Unitrak motor so will go for one of these. Thanks Al!

Just a follow up, battery arrived today. Fits perfectly and promises to give me 14.5 Ah.

Just a quick charge tonight then out tomorrow to see if all is well with the bike.

It has been suggested that there may be something wrong with the coils so if it is a gpz1100 B1 engine with ic igniter which coils should be used. 3 ohm or 2.2 ohm?

If it ain't too wet out tomorrow will get some pics done and uploaded, as it is difficult to describe her really.

Thanks Al for the battery tip, just what the forum is for, sharing knowledge and experience.

LTD Project you wil need to confirm what the coils, ignition and other peripherals for the ignition circuit are, before anyone can say which coils are best suited.

If you have an IC ignitor then you would know because it says so on it but since you didnt mention it as present in youre first post i guess you have DYNA 'S' ignition and possibly Dyna coils??????
Photos would make all the difference.

Al

It does have an IC igniter, no dyna S. No markings on existing coils except bodge repair.

Thanks

Looking increasingly like grey Dyna coils for standard J /B type ignitions with IC ignitor still in place.
