can't comment on a scientific basis but only from practical experience. I have to agree that the only good place for a harris pipe with a street legal baffle fitted to it is in the bin !
I have tried street legal harris pipes on a Z1000a1 , a Z900 a4 and a GS1000 and all 3 bikes ran like a bag of shite until race baffles were fitted
If you have a Harris pipe then try both baffles for yourself and see the difference. As soon as the race baffle is fitted you have a good exhaust system.

This sounds like the carbs are gasping for air, have you tried running withought the air filter fitted, also double check that nothing is obstructing the airbox inlet when the seat is down.
I have some new carbs coming, when they arrive you are welcome to have a try with my old set, they may not be perfect but my bike runs withought killing plugs.

Had a freind who had a light shunt to the back of their car which unknown to them kinked the exhaust. They had exactly the same problems with the running of the car. A new pipecured it, I guess if the exhaust gas is not getting out the incoming fuel air mix is going to be restricted. I'd fit a race baffle.

I think I can sort this problem for you Mick
I will discuss it tomorrow with you
way too many Zeds
I today cleaned the tank completely and it was full of shit. I fitted B7Es plugs and left the tank filler cap open.
The bikefired up on a quarter choke and I drove off with the Goldwing in my mirror. He was watching the exhaust gasses for black smoke. I am running in so 4000Rpm was the limit. The bike from the outset did accelerate as normal, in fact it was quite fast. However I noticed there was the familiar "tingle" in the handgrips and the foot pegs that indicated the bike was not running correctly.
It did after a few minutes seem to feel as if it was starved of fuel. (what a joke eh) It seemed to be having a pulling back feel between 2 and 3000 rpm. This got better at 3.500 in any gear.
Anyway I did about 5 miles alll round and the Goldwing mate reported little, almost no black smoke even when I pushed the revs a bit. We concluded the fault was alsmot gone. HAH Some chance that. I went for a spin of another 5 miles and then the shit hit the fan.
The bike started to vibrate a bit more and the old smell of fuel appeared and I limped home as usual, Upon removing spark plugs all had the same fault, dry, dusty and quite black.
So once again, back to square one. I phoned a contact who suggested more carbs they msut be worn out! Another set? This would now make three and all have the same fault? What kind of rubbish do Mikuni manufacture I thought. My Brothers car is 25 years old and I cannot remember he ever adjusted or cleaned the carb!!
At ?100 a time I will have paid for the bike again in a year if I keep buying carbs. I sound depressed? You bet! Had enough? I sure have.
I have never actually seen another KZ 900 A4 running on the road. In fact I have not seen a Z9000 A4 for twenty years on the road and I am beginnnng to wonder if there is another one. I feel like Mulder loooking for the answer "out there".
Oh as a note I did not mean to sound ungrateful in my reply about the Exhaust comments. It just that there is no way to remove my baffle it seems to have no bolts and looks like a heat fitted unit of one piece construction. Also where does one get another baffle. Harris is dead and numerous phone calls to suppliers of bike exhausts suggest z900 is no longer catered for. I could buy originals I suppose. Just kidding as they do with the price of them.
It has HARRIS WORKS COLLECTION in RED transfer stamped on it. Also I had a Harris before and it ran OK. Admittedly it was the upswept design like the old Kerker. Mine looks like the old yoshi one it is short and only just goes past the rear footpeg.
I cannot actually afford to go out and pay ?300-?400 for an exhaust system and find the plugs still black.
I have had three garages look at it. I have a top man from the forum here spend a week on it and tried every suggestion from the books and forums and the fault never goes away it just eats at my soul, rotting my joy away.
The only thing left is the coils and the exhaust. The coils cold test Ok and the voltage across them on running is normal 12.3V
So thanks for all the sugestions and I shall contact some of the suggesters to see if anything can be done about this heap.
thanks all
regards
Phil

what is the choke circuit? Do you mean the rubber O rings at the base of the choke jet under the Claws. I replaced the rubbers. Can you sort mine out

Looking at this logicaly, you have tried different carbs, ignition, plugs, and leads? so the only common factor is either the pipe, or the air supply (airbox) so the problem has to lay there. If all the plugs are sooting up, then it can't be a coil, it would have to be both coils.
why not buy a cheap used exhaust from e-bay and try it, you can always sell it on afterwards, it would confirm the pipe one way or another, and there have been a few cheap sets on e-bay recently.
