Z1R Switchgear

I've fitted flatter bars to my Z1R and I'm wondering what to do about the switchgear. Obviously on a Z1R the electrical cabling runs through the original bars but I dont want to start drilling holes in the new ones as it will weaken them. Has anyone found a solution to this, either by fitting aftermarket switchgear or by fitting later Kawasaki switchgear?

As long as you've put steel bars on then drill away , done it no problem .
I'm sure i wouldn't trust holing a set of ally Renthals or similar though .
That left switchgear hazard lump is a pain isn't it :D

Yep!

Its a pain alright. I did fit lower steel bars, but would still rather not chop them up. If only to avoid having to thread the cabling through again.......

While I was at it I dry fitted a more modern front mastercylinder too (off a GSXR10000 K2) and a quick action throttle with new cables to complement the Keihin CR Specials as the old throttle was a bit worn and sticky. Lovely and crisp action now. Need to measure up new braided brake lines so I can junk the Wallace and Gromit designed remote master cylinder.

I'll get around to fitting the swingarm and the CMAs one day too...

I was thinking of forking out for a set of PMC replica switches, but its an expensive option.....

Although they are a quite reasonable £35 ish each side, the postage is £40 from Japan and I can't actually be sure that the cabling runs outside the bars as it might be a generic picture... hmm decisions decisions

I drilled and filed/dressed the holes in a set of bars that i put on my Z1R .
Then insulation taped up the switchgear wires and made a kind of rounded end so as not to snag while threading .
Smothered the cable in grease and 30 seconds later the cable was out through the centre .
It really was a piece of .
I didn't need to thread a fish wire through first or owt like that .
It actually was a lot easier than i expected .

just get a rotary burr + grind out a channel in the side of the switches to allow the wiring to run outside of the bars. i used to do this often on the z1000 which had the same design of switch

Saw some switches at D&K off a kz550ltd. These look very similar to the Z1r switches complete with the self canceling solenoid hanging off the bottom. The wires on the top part of the switch exit out the back through a nice rubber seal. Not saying that these will fit a standard z1r but will give you an idea of how to modify your switches.

Found it....Yep, I see your point, its a shame that this particular one is in such shocking condition else I might have bought it to use. The search goes one.

Your encyclopaedic knowledge of Z parts is outstanding. Obviously this uses plugs rather than bullet connectors, but any idea if its adaptable to use on a Z1R?

most of the wiring should be adaptable what doesn't fit you can use/ cut + solder from your old switch or buy the correct type terminals from vehichle wiring products

Errr.... No! The wiring is completely different and I can't fathom how to adapt the new switchgear to fit the old loom. Doh. :(
