Simon, this point that you are referring to, is just a point that I could define a set position, that will be the same on all Z1series & Z900 frames. I simply scribed a line across at right angles to the datum line, where the laser pointer struck, with the pin in place. I did it over a few "unbent" frames, finding that they were all within a mm, except for any modified frames.

My reasoning is then, that since the larger population intersects at that point, that must be the manufactures spec.. 26 degrees. I could then estimate whether the stem has been altered to some steeper or shallower rake.

This jig works well and is extremely accurately. The disadvantage, of course is, that the frame has to be completely stripped of engine componets and swing-arm. However, you have to strip it if you are going to paint/ powdercoat it anyway!

Fookin' 'ell boys you are puttin my broom shank down the headstock method to shame!
Very impressed with that rig Garn1, any chance of poppin over with yer it one evening, so OK, you may have to set off 24 hrs earlier and shell out $2k to get here but I'd be very grateful :P .
Seriously lads its been fascinating reading about different methods of checking- thanks.
Gonna check steering stem is square, if its slightly bent that will not be helping (could be a combo of headstock and steering stem being bent). Just need to set some time aside to sort it out.

Good luck John, i suspect you are a "little " cheesed off?
Hopefully, some of the other postings will have given you some ideas.
As you said, having the incorrect tacho is the least of your problems!

John
I had the same problem with my Z1B. I stripped it down but didn't notice the headstock was out until after i had it powder coated :( . . It was out by 20mm when measured to the front axle. I took it to a specialist frame straightner who was able to straighten it without applying heat and without damaging the coating. So you may be able to do that with yours.

Z1B BENT

I was looking down the ZPOWER site and they use ELITE for some of their work and recommend them, (mostly for their finishing) but they only tend to use quality people, so Elite may be a good choice.

With regard to motolining the bike, I cartwheeled a GS1000 At Snett (serves me rigt for riding a suzy probably) but I had it sorted on a motoliner by a local shop I know well and they sorted it no problem.

You need to check what needs stripping as if my memory serves correctly I think you need to leave the engine, swing arm and rear wheel in place, but it depends on their jig, so check before you strip the bike totally.

(Also I would echo others thoughts on a replacement frame, DVLA are a lot stricter on swaps these days. Mind you I swapped a damaged frame recently and with a few letters, full receipts (from a dealer not ebay) and an explanation of the reason why they were ok. But it does depend on if you get a jobsworth or not.)
Hope this helps.
Cheers
Phil

Headstock is definately twisted to rt side, have stripped bike down to frame and engine with swing arm and shocks in place, with forks off you can eye up the twist easily. Bottom yoke/stem is not bent so thats something!
Need recommendations for good frame straighteners lads, called Seastar Superbikes (they sorted Dr Rod Gibsons Z1B frame and they were very helpful) but its a 650 mile round trip so a bit far for me.
Anyone know good firm in north of England /southern Scotland?

John, you could try contacting Carole Nash, [regardless whether you are insured with them or not], they have their own repair/workshop in Cheshire, at least it isn't that far away from you.
Good luck!
Please let us know how you get on.
