Chain rivetting

#1 PostAuthor: ROZZER » Sun Sep 16, 2007 3:10 pm

Fitting new o ring 630 chain to bike, how the hell are you supposed to rivet the link? Its supposed to be soft but its actually really hard. have managed to fit it using ball pein hammer (hard to get on pins) + various punches, just a bit concerned that it might not be perfect (all forces are longitudinal so I guess the slightest pein over will do the job). Any one know where I can get a 630 chain rivetting tool from? All the ones I've seen are for 530 chains.

Hi John,
I bought a rivveting tool off ebay a year or so back, though i find the easyest way on a 630 chain is to use an angle grinder and grind (carefuly) the pinns off one side and tap the link out. I have used the tool to push the new link in but i lost the small ball bearing out of the end of the tool so i got a mate to hold a hammer against the inside of the sprocket/soft link and then i peined the pins over slightly with a punch/hammer.It works fine as long as you take your time etc, and make sure you havn't pushed the new link on too far or you will get a tight spot/link in the chain.
Ill try and find out where i got my rivvet tool from.

you can still get DID split links in 630 but you may have to order them.

I can't believe you'd recommend a 'spilt-pin' Rich!
