Oh dear..... Cam chain help? GPZ1100 UNI

#1 PostAuthor: LTD Project » Thu Aug 01, 2013 1:26 pm

So almost ready to put the top back on the enging when the mood ( of uncertainty ) took me and I decided to fit a split cam chain to it... GB told me that it had not been replaced when he did the engine so...

.... Please dont respond with if it ain't broke don't fix.....

Got myself a nice new tool and split the old one no probs, joined new one and wound it round on the crank still no probs, then I come to joining the new chain together with a squeeze on new rivet....

Only managed to create dead link in chain without actually rounding the rivet off in any effective way to make it stay put....

Hve now purchased two new links and rivets with a view to having another go but before I do I thought I would ask.

Any further advice or offers of lending of more effective tool to complete the job most welcome.

Live and Learn, and then do it anyway

A mat of mine built his own tool for doing these and has done loads one of the things he always does is use some shim steel between the plates when riveting the new link. It just stops them crimping together.
Might be worth considering.

then a few sharp taps with a hammer and punch whilst checking for free movement and visual signs that the link looks right

Yeah, both good ideas... Thanks for the replies

Do you know what thickness of shim steel was used?

I have some small clamps and a good lump of metal so that might also work.

I will bear both in mind on Sunday. Wish me luck!
