exhaust problems!

#1 PostAuthor: justin taylor » Tue Sep 11, 2007 5:08 pm

I need some advice please.I bought my Z1B a few weeks ago,it had done next to no miles for the past few years. It is a unrestored bike in excellant condition but since i have been riding it i have now got a couple of pin holes on the right hand side cans(GUTTED).They are very small but will only get worse, can you buy the cans seperately or is it best to buy the whole system? Now for the worst bit,how much do they cost? Thanks in advance for any help.

by the term "cans" i assume you mean the exhausts? if you have pots of cash it would be better to change the entire system as yes they will get worse, you may find that the insides of the pipes are falling to bits as well, its common for all the different chambers to rot away completely, if you have the cash then dave marsden at zpower can supply a set for about ?700 however these are copies of the original ones and are identical exept for the part no. stamped on the upper side of the pipes (khi z1/z2 dgm and so forth) try removing the baffles and looking inside to determine what state they are in, if your on a budget then try patching the holes with "chemical metal" or similar epoxy based filler, ive got a couple of these repairs on my z900 pipes and they are fine, its a bit unsightly but luckily mine are all underneath where they cant be seen! also a good practice is to load up the pipes with some corrosion inhibitor like duck oil or similar to keep the dreaded rust out. hope this is of use :D

Justin, You can buy the individual exhaust pipes but they are approx ?350 each and are actually for the 76 Z900 (stampings on top of silencers confirm this). If you want utter originality keep an eye on EBay as they come up now and again (some on this week but may have finished now last price I looked were ?410). I recently bought the pattern set from Z Power works out about ?750 with fittings, they are excellent and exactly same as originals apart from stampings (Dave Marsden reckons thay are better quality than the originals).

Justin,
speak to Steve Thomas, get him to take a look.
I can pm you his number if you wish.
Four pipes rule, anything else is second best.
