Guy called Hugh Williams. He does a lot of Martin stuff on eBay. I think he used to work for Cobra Racing. Can't remember his username but think it is hayabusawilliams. Application and paint is Flying Tiger

its a tuough call fitting usds on a period machine, ive done the same and arnt totally convinced they suit the bike, mudgaurd just adds to the problem ,if i build another bike ,,i go with rwus as the look is deffo there & the mudgaurd is a piece of p..s then,martinz1000r wrote:Opinions invited please (don't know why I am asking because everyone on here will give one wanted or not). Started building out the rolling chassis. I'm thinking that a) the USD forks give it a slightly nose down look and b) that front mudguard is just not right. Obviously I am not after perfect period replica otherwise I would not have used these forks but would we agree the mudguard has to go?

Mrs S out today and sun is shining so pushed on and done as much as depleted parts stock allows. Mainly gaskets and the odd nut but we now ground to a halt. Cylinder head back on first. Again pain in the arse as the only way to get it on was to undo front mounts and allow the motor to rotate back and down on the rear mounting:
Bolted on a few frame fittings
Refurbed Moto Martin rearsets
Now pushed in to garage as i guess not going to be able to get any of my bits i need before next weekend

Another day in the sun so bit more done. Doesn't look a lot but brake calipers stripped, cleaned and all new seals took all morning on it's own. Apologies for the photo quality but daughters camera and did not realise she put a huge finger print on the lens.

It's the prototype what the RaceFit Legend series. 100% titanium and weighs about the same as a large ant. Not sure if you remember but a couple of years ago Performance Bikes did a feature on Jon Keeling's Spondon framed Z1 with a special exhaust they were developing for classics. Article said if enough interest RaceFit would start to produce so I phoned RaceFit and Jon told me that he was parting out the Spondon and if I wanted the exhaust we could do a deal. The Martin was packed off with a courier to Derbyshire where Jon made a new link pipe and all the right brackets for the frame and send it back. Wont tell you what it cost but it was lot less than the limited edition Yoshi pipe and that's steel not titanium. Can't wait to hear what it sounds like!

A cautionary note to anyone thinking of buying 2nd hand carbs from eBay or the likes.....
A couple of years ago I bought a set of CR33 off eBay for the Martin. Got a good deal on them but they still cost me £350. They looked fine but the choke was very stiff. I send them off to Allens a couple of weeks ago for a clean and service and Allens just told me that virtually every jet and seal internally needs replacing, the throttle assembly is bent and 3 threads need helicoiling. Bill with post will come to £450!!!
A new set of CR33 in £601 + VAT
The only positive I can draw from this is as Dave from Allen's says I will have brand new carbs in old bodies. Should have gone straight for the new option and a tough lesson learned for the future.

Very aware that it's been a long time since i last posted any updates to this. It's a typical tale of 1 step forward and 2 back. I have also had to resort to external assistance in the form of the brilliant Mike Woods (aka Full Metal Ornament) who has made all the fairing brackets, new sub frame, battery box etc.
Apologies the photo quality is not great as these were all phone pictures rather than camera.
Since these photos were taken I have changed the exhaust system. The Racefit system in the photos is far too close to the front wheel and will hit the tyre on braking. When Jon built it the bike had the Bandit front end which must give longer trail and greater rake. It's not going to waste though as the GPz has a crack in the collector box and it does fit that. I have now swapped the Rastec exhaust off my Z900 which fits this very nicely and looks more in keeping with period.
Next job is wiring loom and then we ready to go! Target finish by Kawasaki day at the Ace.

Frame is powder coated gloss black. Original plating long gone when i got it and it had been powder coated silver. Griff's in Bristol stripped and recoated it.
Since these pictures taken it now sports a different exhaust, has carbs, wiring is part done and we have Easter as target finish date.
