have you checked the plugs. they might be wet with fuel if you have been trying to start the engine when there was no spark? you should have the same voltage at the coil wire as you do at the battery within 1or 2 volts if not you have a bad connection somewhere .have you checked the block connectors on the cdi as these are prone to corrosion
got the same voltage at batt as coils. I only used 1 plug to test all cylinders and as I said, only outer left sparking. I'm going to see if by chance all my leads are knackered apart from the one that's sparking obviously. I had all the connections apart and all looked OK. I'll get back to you.z1bman wrote:have you checked the plugs. they might be wet with fuel if you have been trying to start the engine when there was no spark? you should have the same voltage at the coil wire as you do at the battery within 1or 2 volts if not you have a bad connection somewhere .have you checked the block connectors on the cdi as these are prone to corrosion

now it's sparking on both left cylinders. I swapped around all the leads and all are OK. I swapped the left coil wires to the righthand side coil and it's sparking on the right OK. So all I can think of is I have some very dodgy wiring somewhere. Could the igniter box cause this ? I mean only firing on one or two cylinders ?Or the regulator/rectifier ? or do you think it's bad wiring ?z1bman wrote:have you checked the plugs. they might be wet with fuel if you have been trying to start the engine when there was no spark? you should have the same voltage at the coil wire as you do at the battery within 1or 2 volts if not you have a bad connection somewhere .have you checked the block connectors on the cdi as these are prone to corrosion

The coils (& ignitor) are matched in pairs.... 1 & 4..... 2 & 3.
So if you have just sparks at 1 or 4, but not 2 & 3 it could be naff coil or ignitor or pick up
But if you got spark at either 1 & 2, or 3 & 4, or 1 & 3 or 2 & 4 the coil, ignitor & pick-ups may be OK
If the thing works but gets progressively worse - could be a coil or ignitor on its way out.......... READ THIS>>>
Just got me Trumpet MOT'd this weekend...... and noticed it's the fourth year of ownership - which is a looooong time for me
:
Bike ran great there, but started to misfire a bit here & there on the way home.
Whipped the plugs out and they were a bit sooty... so cleaned them up, took the pancake air-filter back off and re-fitted the bell mouth, then off for a spin.
Ran nice for a few miles then started hiccuping.... mile or 2 later started missing real bad and spitting back thru' carb
Limped back home - Being British is struggled on like an Old Soldier
ictory:
Stripped the Amal down, cleaned it up & fitted an in-line filter.... then off for another "test ride"
Ran OK first couple miles then got worserer & worserer.....
So convinced meself the Boyer B ignition was fooked..... But decided to swap the coils (2 x Wassell things) for a twin outlet Dynas 3 ohm...... Out for yet another TEST RIDE
YeeHaa..... problem sorted.... one of the Wassell coils must be on its way out - I just love this bike

And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!
OK I guess the first way to go is a coil as i may be able to borrow one somewhere. As for the pick-ups etc I guess it's ebay USA. Does anyone know if other big Zs coils will be ok on mine ? and pickups and igniters for that matter ???Pigford wrote:The coils (& ignitor) are matched in pairs.... 1 & 4..... 2 & 3.

No. As I said it was running OK a week ago and I didnt touch anything. Just drove it into my garage and now it wont start. I swapped over the coil wires (red and black and red and green) to see if there was anything wrong with the coils and it doesnt seem there is. Its looking like its either the pickups, reg/rec, or igniter. Theres 12volts at both red wires. I'll go through everything again tomorrow.z1bman wrote:sounds to me like you have got the coils connected up wrong ? the left hand coil should be connected to no 1 + no 4 plugs the right side coil connected to no 2+ no3 plugs

Found a set of pick-ups in my house off an ST, fitted them and had, from left to right numbers 1&3 firing, also had spare coils, changed them, same 1 &3. Then stopped it and it wouldn't start, all cylinders dead. I've cleaned all connections with proper electrical cleaning fluid. anyway when it was firing on 1 &3 I decided to double check the igniter wires and one was almost cut through. So I bared it and rejoined it and that's when it stopped working altogether. So I'm now stuck. I'm going to take off the harness firstly and check every wire for continuity, my only question is, the three yellow wires into the alternator, do they have to go onto the wires they came off or does it matter ? seems silly having them all the same colour. Also re-newed all the HT leadsz1bman wrote:pick up coils available from cradley part no 59026-1133 £130

Cannot do photos, maybe when my g'friend gets here I'll ask her to do some. What I dont understand is, there are two HT leads coming out of each coil right, the left coil is feeding cylinders 1 & 2 the right is feeding 3 & 4, there's 12 volts going to both coils and yet only 1 & 3 are firing. So would that suggest the pickups, or at least one of them is dead ? I've stripped back the harness a bit here and there and it's in good shape, very good in fact. As I said I've cleaned and checked all connections. Would the reg/rec have anything to do with it ? bearing in mind it ran lovely a week ago. It's not road legal yet so I only drove it round my back road in dry weather, so it hasn't had any use in all the time i've had it. Could it be the Igniter ?z1bman wrote:it would help if you could post some photo's of how you have got the coils wired + connected to the plugs

your coils are connected wrong the coil on the left should be connected to no 1 cylinder + no 4 cylinder . the right coil should be connected to no 2 cylinder + no 3 cylinder. you say in your original post that the bike was running perfect before it was parked up if the coils where connected as you said the bike certainly would not have run
