Z900 A4 Running Problem

Not being very mechanically minded i'm after any advice on what could be the possible fault with my Z900 A4.
I've owned the bike for about 4 years and until last night never had any problems with it.
I was out and noticed that it started to feel abit sluggish but was still running on 4 cylinders.
When I started to de-accelerate it just cut out so I changed down and bumped it whilst it was still rolling and managed to keep it running.
I noticed that the instrument panel lights were dimming so I switched off
the lights and this seemed to help for abit on the way home.
As I was going along I tried to switch the lights back on but this caused the bike to slow so I switched them back off.
By the time I got the bike home it had started to backfire and today when
I turned the ignition on the battery was near flat.
Any ideas on what the problem could be??? Thanks.

Ur gonna have to check battery first.
If flat, recharge over nite.
Refit & start bike.
If u got a multimeter, check volts across battery terminal whilst revving.
If not, switch lights on, rev bike & they should get a bit brighter, this will give some idea if bike system is charging.
If not, first follow wires from alternator ( l/h engine cover) and check all connectors. Best to disconnect each one & check if clean & a tight fit. If any show corrosion (may be green colour) clean of & spray with WD40 or similar.
Recheck lights with revs.

make sure that there are two wires going to the neg and one red to the pos. It looks like it isnt charging and using all the juice to run it from the battery till it is goosed. You will likely just manage a few thousand rpm anything higher will kill it.

You may find that the voltage regulator, situated underneath the battery box, has boiled the battery dry.

and while you're checking the connections don't forget to check the earths as well.

I had a problem similar to this a little while ago,I had put the bike on the steering lock whilst down the local pub after work,when I came out(after a swift half) the bike wouldnt start and all lights /indicators etc were nearly non existant,managed to start it on the kick start eventually and limp home.
Checked all wiring /charging system,battery was low volts and couldnt seem to get a good charging reading.
Anyway turns out an earth wire had broken in the headlamp when putting the steering lock on,caused a short circuit and caused burn damage to one of the connectors under the side panel.I Repaired the wiring and changed the battery problem fixed.
Yours does sound like battery but check your earths too.
