Z1000 Rear Brake Pedal Spring

#1 PostAuthor: JohnC » Fri May 17, 2013 6:30 am

Any tips apart from brute strength to put the spring back on with scratching everything in sight?

I remember doing this many years ago and it seemed a right pita :/

If you have a spring puller it's real easy.

Worth getting one if your working on bikes often.

Could make a homemade one from a coathanger etc.

Thanks for the help guys, but this seemingly simple operation has me completely beaten, tears of frustration after faffing about for nearly 2 hrs are all I could come up with!!! And they didn't help :)

For such a well designed bike in so many other areas the location of the foot-peg brackets make this such a complete fail for ease of installation.

Is a spring puller the only other answer? Even with one of those I cant imagine how it would help given the terrible location.

I guess I had more muscle mass and determination back in the day when I fitted it previously ://

Can anyone who's fitted the rear brake pedal recently offer me any further advice, or a step by step guide to using a spring puller? (link to said puller?) Is it like this one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Beta-Exhaust- ... 0111437639

I have the spring sitting with the rounded part already under the lever and I'm assuming I somehow need to compress the spring round the lever to hook it back up onto the frame bracket??

I'd never make MENSA, that's for sure :)

Hmm, yeah but what's the technique if any z1bman? Am I doing it the right way with the way I've the spring sitting atm? Any particular tips apart from wire, coat-hangers and cable ties? I'd have thought with such simple tips that I'm overly simple to carry them out due to my subsequent failures :)

fit the spring onto the lever making sure it is located at the rear of the lever. fit the lever + spring onto the shaft + fit the nut + washer. only using a couple of threads. use a piece of strong electrical wire about 3 feet long + fold in half put the folded wire over the spring + wrap it around your hand a couple of turns preferably with a glove on your hand. then pull the lever towards the washer. pull the wire attached to the spring from behind the lever + locate it underneath the lever

Pull off the brake pedal and fit the spring loosely with the hard to get on 180 degree bend round the uppermost part of the pedal then jiggle the pedal back onto the shaft flipping the straight part of the spring under the retainer before fully pressing the pedal fully back on,i know what you mean about these little darlings, good luck Paul J

Right, finally managed it. I did things slightly differently from what was outlined here, unless I was reading things in the wrong way. I Hooked the square / flat part of the spring around the frame first, as it seemed easier to compress the spring using the end that went round the brake pedal. I then used some small chain link I had lying around (was for a lamp) and pulled down on the spring from that end towards the garage floor (if that makes sense). Jobs a good un' anyhow :)
