Ignition HT Leads

#1 PostAuthor: DaveZ1 » Sat Apr 13, 2013 2:21 pm

I was sure I saw somewhere on these forums that the HT leads on early Z coils can't be removed from the coil and are "bonded in"
My Z1 restoration project coils check out fine but the HT leads are a bit tired and stiff. I have found these
http://www.z1parts.net/product/z1-900-i ... -plug-caps
from Z1Parts.net showing replacement leads and caps to fit Z1 1973 which would be ideal but not sure if the leads can be refitted to original coils. do you have to splice onto the original lead at the coil?
Any ideas?

Dave, these early Z coils HT leads are joined internally.
They are soldered to a lug about an inch down from the lead exit point.
They can be joined to a new lead by trimming off the old lead at a suitable point and joining the new lead by means of an adaptor for this purpose or by using a double ended screw into the leads.

Years ago, I used to use an automobile suppressor for this purpose.

Thanks for clarifying that Garn. I think if i have to make a joint i will prefer a good soldered joint and a couple of layers of heat shrink sleeving.

Pretty sure you can't solder an HT lead. You would have to do what Garn did or find NOS or A/M coils.
Better still, fit Dyna S coils and ignition and have better performance and reliability.

Dave, I had used straight through connectors for the same reason on my Z900 A4 for a couple of years, upgraded to Dyna 3 Ohm coils with Dyna S ignition now.....the expensive route !
Got the connectors from Auto Electrical shop but you should be able to get online somewhere now I guess.
