Will have to give this Simoniz stuff a whirl guys, 'cos I'm sorely missing PJ1. Thanks for the heads up :)

I, ve used halfords engine satin black enamel, and the results are good, prep it well and it applies smoothly leaving a nice finish. Also the same paint is fantastic for refurbing your zed wheels, better than new I reckon.

Yes! That's it and the Sperex tough black is the same stuff.
Treat it the same as PJ1.
See my cafe racer thread for the finish as i have done all the engine in it.

Zed thanks for the info, I've seen your build thread and that looks quality,
do you think electric heat gun instead of baking will do the job OK? I can't bake the cases properly as I haven't opened them (seals/gaskets all in).

I have done small parts with the heat gun but i apply the heat opposite the painted side so that the heat radiates into the paint from the underside.
I also warm the part slightly to sweat out any moisture from the castings which give the paint a better key.
I have never just painted a cold complete engine for a cosmetic tart up so i don't know how long it will last in the long term.
The pj1 and simoniz etc is good stuff though so should stay looking good for quite a while if it's applied to a nice clean base.

I've used this for my bikes. Used on jet engines and can be sprayed from a HVLP gun. Satin black, cost about £45 for a litre. Done a few exhausts with it too.
