Z1 series ~ Rear Brake Cam lever

#1 PostAuthor: Garn 1 » Fri Apr 05, 2013 12:18 am

Anyone have this trouble.
Ordered a chrome rear brake arm (or lever).
This is the small lever that actuates the rear drum brakes.
The one I purchased is approx 130mm overall.
the standard lever on the Z1 series is approx 110mm overall.

I do realise there is a small difference (bolt configuration) in the Z1 and the other levers on Z1A, Z1B, Z900A4

I think, this longer item besides having a great chrome finish, has the disadvantage of being hard to fit and it looks odd!
Seen a few standard length levers on ePay, however with postage look pretty expensive, also, its hard to pick the difference from a photo.

I would appreciate any comments.

ORIGINAL PART WAS SUPERSEDED FROM 42029-021 TO 42029- 033 TO IMPROVE REAR BRAKE PERFORMANCE THAT WHY THEY ARE LONGER TO GAIN EXTRA LEVERAGE

Z1bman, firstly, thanks for your help, however, chasing up your part #'s, I find...
Z1..... Lever, rear brake cam is # 42029-21.
Whereas, Z1A, Z1B and Z900-A4 ..... # 42029-33.

Both numbers reflect the same length arm, with the only change being in the clamping bolt head position/ direction...42029-21 from the front, 33 from the back. The change being, to allow clear vision of the brake wear indicator.

I'm starting to suspect it's off a different model Kawasaki. I notice you are a bit of an expert in this area. Thanks again!

My further investigations into this indicate that many Z1 spare companies only have this longer rear brake arm version.
I sent this to a german supplier.... www.Z.FEVER.de
Here is the correspondance

Is this the long arm (approx 130mm overall)?
There seems to be two types , PMC of Japan have a # PM81-3190 which is the long type.
I require the shorter standard Z1 item (approx. 110mm overall).

the original part / part no 42029- 021 was fitted to z1/a/b you will find it very difficult to find the original part as it was superceded to the z900 a4 which is a longer lever. the position of the clamp bolt whether from the left or right would not obscure the wear indicator as the indicator is positioned above the bolt + in the same place but one has a wear indicator sticker the other has a cast indicator

Sorry Z1man,
I have both parts manuals for Z1 and Z1A.

the Z1 parts catalogue (page58, sect 24 rear hub)
item 2 ....... LEVER, rear brake cam # 42029-21.

The Z1A part (page 58, sect 24 Rear hub)
item 2 ......LEVER , rear brake cam # 42029-33

Would you agree this change in part number reflected the change in bolt configuration?
I have a Z900 -A4 parts Cat somewhere.... I'm sure it will also say it is the same as the Z1A cat.

There were different models around this era, Z400, H1 & H2. Perhaps it's one of those with this longer lever.... It's only 2 cm longer but noticeable!
I really have trouble that PMC would make such an error.
