How many milesfrom a chain

Hi Guy's

How many miles would you expect to get from a drive chain?
And what is the best drive chain lubricant?

Reason for asking. This is to help my wife understand why I keep needing to change the chain and sprokets.
It took her years to under stand that tyres wear out and need replacing.
I have not tried to explain about oil and filters yet.

not much help I know but its all proportional to how flicky your right wrist is so you need to be carefull what you tell her

I can tell her, its because I am quick with my right hand, she might get the wrong idea. Any way, these days it is only good for peeing.

Wurth Dry Lube........the best innovation for motorcycles

Used it for years.

Thrashed through Europe in torrential rain many times, a few British winters, ridden the Nurburgring, a few 180 blasts down the autobahn and still on the original chain and sprockets at 25000 miles.........on a ZX 12

The zx12 chains must be good,as my mate has one with 32000 miles on it! He used to be a bike riding instructor,and rides the thing hard!

As long as you fit new sprockets at the same time, all DID sealed ring chains are warranted for either 15000 or 25000 miles depending on the grade of chain you fit. That is clearly the one to be aiming for.

Most road bikes should only ever need one chain and sprocket replacement in their lifetime.

I get more than 1600 miles between adjustments !! You are doing something very wrong there mate.

Any decent spray chain lube is good enough to lube a sealed ring chain. It's only the outside that needs protecting from the weather.

Personally I either use Motorex clear lube, or Wurth dry lube - I do not like the waxy stuff. It can cause grit to stick to it and then you have a very effective grinding paste. ;)
