Sounds like the 73 I am restoring. Got the old girl back together after new pistons, rings, intake valves, cam chain. camsprockets, coils. and many other parts. As I was rechecking the clearences I came accross an old artical about a recall on the 73 to change out valve buckets. seems the original one on the first 8,600 bike were breaking shims. Mine were never done. Got on ebay and found NOS buckets for $250.00us. Now I need to take the cams out again and replace buckets and shims. It will be worth it in the end to see it run again.

You may try Z1 enterprizes in the US for oversized piston/rings. I have bought most of my parts from Jeff and have saved alot of cash.

Before committing to new pistons give Westwood Liners a call on 01299 878727. They can supply new cylinder liners which a good machine shop can fit to your barrels and bore to suit your existing pistons. You'll still need new rings but it might save a few quid.

Actually it was not fine for three days. It just did not go anywhere for three days :))))))
It is still in bits today and I have lost interest and the car needs a service. that NEVER lets me down.

If you want the carbs ultasonically cleaned pop down the A23 to Lombard roundabout and see Dave at MercTec, he's on the right as you approach the roundabout, next door to a very good cafe/sandwich shop. he's got a really nice ultrasonic bath big enough to fit a bank of carbs into, in fact it'll fit a Z head in it if needed. He's a good mate of mine and will do a good job of them.

thanks Jam
I am awaiting a new cylinder head at the moment, and I doubt if this year I will manage to get this awful bike on the road, as summer is nearly over and autumn approaches. I have taken the details you posted and thanks for the info mate :)))))

phil ,when you bought this bike did it run ok ,has it been rebored? if so i suspect its been done by some cowboy ,and what is happening is that your cylinders are filling with oil ,because the clearence is way to big for the rings .
take the head off and have a butchers

thanks Ollie
It is simple that the rings/pistons were knackered beyond belief and the bore was scored badly. I had the rebore done and have fitted 66mm pistons. I now have a new head and will get it bead blasted on Tuesday. The old head had a broken fin on the cyn 2 lower stud so a long bolt is not realy a solution, a new head is :))))
Hope to then assemble it on Wednesday. Quite simply I was sold a pig by a pig who though he was oh so clever. We shall see.
Phil
