Did make one years ago for car panel work using a big roller bearing etc and it sat gathering dust and taking up space so gave it away as i never intended doing that sort of work again..
Would have been no real use here though as the alloy is 3mm thick so the main job of planishing with the hammer was unavoidable and the smoothing a minor job in comparison.

the 3mm was prob a pain in the arse to shape, but with the trade off of being plenty strong and plenty aluminium to sand smooth

Yeah! that was the idea (and it's the only thickness these road signs come in  ) got it down to less than a 1/3 of a mill removed so plenty strong.
Just need to conjure up some tidy looking mounts and the jobs a gudun

Mudguard mounted.
Not a lot of scope with the forks only having mounts on the front of the legs so some alloy 'Y' brackets are the best solution.
I plan to paint them black so they blend in and the polished guard will float above the tyre.

A quick mock up with the bodywork back on and a look out in the daylight to check the lines are right

Decided the bare ally looks good so the planned KR paint job is out and lots of polishing is in.

Good call on the polishing. The silver forks & swingarm will tone in well perfectly

I agree with the last comment. :D

Going back to the front mudguard, did you use the xjr one as a bit of a buck?? Id love to have a go at making one,but have zero experience in doing that kind of thing, but an eager mind. Guessing a bit,but did you form the radius first to match the tyre and then beat the sides???
Id love to hear more,if you would be kind enough to share??
:D

I didn't use the XJR muddy at all.
I cut out the ally plate the same width as the forks and guestimated the length needed (it could always be trimmed later) the ends were then radiused to match the width.
I used black marker grid lines as a guide.
Beating along the length pushed the metal sideways to curve around the tread towards the rim and beating across the guard helps create the fore and aft radius to match the tyre circumference.
That is a very simplified explanation as the curvature in all directions is a combination of both actions.
If you look at the pic you may see i don't go right up to the edge.
There is an unbeaten area around 15mm wide that is unstretched and this part trys to remain in the original shape/size which helps pull the sides round.
I have no training , everything i do is self taught and this mudguard was formed using only a ball pein hammer and 14lb lump hammer head in the vice as an anvil, no bag of sand or english wheel.
Time for you to get the hammers out

Wanted, plastic front mudguard for blade forks.....

You make it sound easy, but I think youve some great skills there! Thank you for explaining it to me. Id really love to get a shorty polished muddy in a sort of LTD style, for a 17 inch wheel.
I might give it a try with some alloy sheet I have, but dont expect to see any pics! :D
