Carb ID Help

#1 PostAuthor: Potts » Tue Feb 05, 2013 8:59 am

HI Guys. New here.
Coming to the end of rebulding my 76 Z900.
The carbs were a bit ropey so I had a skulk around Ebay and turned up a full set in Calfornia. On arrival they are like new and most likely never been taken apart. However there are some differences and I am not 100% sure what I have.
First the idle adjustment screw comes out below the float bowls.
The bores measure 29mm. Float bowl drains are the small side mounted screw type. Jets are....
Needles 5CN15
Primaries 15
Mains 117.5

Anyone have any idea what I have here?
I can post some pic's if that will help.

Hi and welcome.
A picture would be a big help.
If they are 29mm they could be smoothbores :up if so they should have a 17mm drain bolt on the bottom of the float bowl.

1978 z1r are 28mm (which might measure 28-29 at the mouth) They have
5cn15 needles
15 pilots

107.5 std mains

So they could be Z1IR'S

Most of the Z carbs (I think this still applies to the Z9) will have an ID number stamped on the inlet flange where they bolt on. That should tell you exactly what you have?

No little square on the float bowl so I guess VM28s. The mixture screw is as Z1bman's post but no pump jet.

Can anyone give me advice on the jetting? I am running a standard air filter set up and a Vance & Hines 4-1. Engine is stock apart from the ports being cleaned up.

Thanks for the speedy replies :-))))

117'S wont be a million miles out two or three jet sizes up for a 4-1 (if it is fairly straight through) should be about right.

I would try 112.5 /115 's if I had them otherwise stick them on and see what its like and buy some more if you need them.

Not all 29 smoothbores have the big drain screws, you can use the style with angled drains that look like vm 26-28 style also which came on early smoothbores.
