Cheers Zmax
Yes, still got 'em.
The calipers are as per a Ducati SPS too. Have you got some then?
Had to use spacers for discs tho.

I dont suppose youd be interested in selling the brackets or posting dimensions would you?
Im building a turbo project for one of my friends back here in states, and Ive always considered stock brakes to be borderline for seious performance especially the way he likes to ride!
I can send him on the hunt for correct calipers and rotors/mc to work with it.
Thanks

Ive built and ridden plenty of big bore turbos over the years, his problem is hes always had sportbikes with good brakes/supension to go with the hp!
Trying to make him understand this bike will not stop/steer like his ol ducati he was riding before buying this old kz,Since Im doing the build from ground up for him Im trying to stack the odds in his favor.
damn kids!

I got my first z1 as a basket case when I was 13 back in 1978,I was around 15 when I got it running.
So I went from a 125 hodaka dirtbike to 900 kaw at a very young age, what a learning curve it was!
Having been around them since around 74-75 riding on the back and getting to help turn wrenches on them I was aware of there short comings and learned how to fix a lot of the problems, those problems I couldnt learn to fix/modify I learned to ride through some how!
Thats the problem with these young guys who grew up riding bikes with good suspension, they never really have to learn to survive wrestling a flexible bike through a corner

A quick update since the last photos.

Have solved a few problems and made a few more decisions.
Here's how the bike stands now:

Image

Bit dark but shows the low-down stance:

Image

Have invested in a set of Ohlins for the back which are obligatory really.
After much deliberation about the exhaust I've bought a chrome Marving and twisted the tail round to give it a nice kick-up. Well pleased with how it looks.
Morten kindly sold me some rear pegs to act as a bracket. I wouldn't have bothered with pillion pegs but Mrs H sometimes insists on going on the back(with std seat not Guigliari!!) They're PMC so nice bits if kit. Here's a pic of them held roughly in position.

Image

Rear brake is going to be a gold Brembo underslung caliper but will have to make a disc up to fit the hub - -will be drilled to match the front :)

I've got raised clipons that go under the top yoke which also means I regain the forklength as they pull all way thru the stepped yoke.
Note the clocks are dropped down so not to be flaping in the breeze. Gives a nice nose-down aspect.

Just got to sort out the chain run as it snags on the shock and trails on the front of swing arm so will be contacting Debbens for a 43 rear.
Oh, and as a treat, I bought the quick reaction throttle off Morten too.
Finally feel like I'm getting somewhere.

Cheers,
Hilton :)

Erm, can't seem to post the photos up, sorry.
Will try to sort it out.

It's been a while but have made some small bits of progress.
Apologies for the shabby photos but had to use my rubbish phone camera in poor light:(

Solved the chrome front mudguard conundrum.
A Triumph Thunderbird Sport guard was stripped & chromed. It was almost a factory fit.

Image

Matched the rear caliper & disc to the front Brembos. Like-new items from a 916.
Just needed an adaptor plate made to fit the hub which is virtually unnoticeable. I was worried I was going to end up with some Heath-Robinson type torque are arrangement but the whole rig just lined up perfectly with the JMC front bracket and all that was needed was a minimalist ally drilled arm. Simples!!

Image

Got a larger back sprocket which clears the chain from swingarm rub. Still a bit close but will just have to see what it's like when on the move.

Image

Ill be fitting some black brake lines and once connected we'll be rolling again.

This doesn't really show that much but have kept the kicked up exhaust at the sacrifice of having a pillion option.

Image

Hopefully have more news soon.

Cheers - Hilton.

It's pretty much finished now :D

Took it out for a spin.
Really pleased with the handling: Turns in nicely.
Off on Monday to Bob Farnham to dial the carbs in on the Dyno.

Here are some shots of it - sorry there's so many, I got carried away.....

Hope you like them,
Cheers, Hilton.
