Z1 at last

#1 PostAuthor: morten » Sun Nov 18, 2012 6:13 pm

After sitting in my garage for almost 6 years waiting to get the pride back, it is now time to start the rebuild of my Z1 no.6818 engine no.7003.
Bike was sold new in Sweden april 1973 and had 65K on the meter when I bought it 2006. It was not a butiful sight!! but most of the correct parts was there and the price was ok.

I will try to restore this to as near to mint as possible with the parts I have been collecting during past years. I think I have the most of it ready but there is always something popping up that has not been thought of.
Hope I can ask you guys on the forum for help when I need to, for sure when it comes to deatils around differences in european vs usa models

Will put up pics if there is some interest for it.

This is what I have done so far:

All of the stamped and marked parts on this bike is from mid to late 72 !
so I think it was build whery early in 73.

Good Luck Morten, I was in Oslo a few months ago it is probably cheaper to restore a zed in Norway than buy a pint of beer :D

Hi Morten, that frame looks nice and the finish looks bang on. Is it 2k?
look forward to watching this.
I have those 12/2 controls from a bike from about March 73/ I also have en Svensk in the mid 4000s, produced around december I think. It has en extra attachement for the steering damper on the LH side (I mean one on each side = definitely original) . Have you ever seen this?

Hi malmojoe
I have never seen or heard of the attachments on both sides! That is really strange, but I think it was a lot of different variations on the early machines up to about 7000 and then especially the first 5000.
Is the swedish bike original sold red or green?
I think mine was red/orange when new, but I am not sure. Is there any way to check this in Sweden?

Please let me know if you see something I should do different.

Does somebody know where to get a european wiring diagram sticker for the doc tray, I have only seen the usa ones. :(

some progress guys but it goes slowly because to much to do with other things. On the other side there is no hurry. today there was minus 18 degrees outside so theres going to be a long winter. :cold

I have build the wheels and put them on and I think it's a milestone with rolling chassis.
Rest of the chassis stuff is just easy handeling and clean work :D

8mm chain tensioners and everything is nice and clean

The engine is next, and as you can see from the pics I am cleaning of all gaskets, inspect all treads and repair the one needed.
I test all treads with the right torq before I blast and paint the engine, then I will have no surprises the day I put everything together.

As you can see I block off the cases and the engine top before blasting. It prevent a lot of glass to come inside, and this makes the cleaning after much easier. An other benefit is that I just can paint direct after blasting, without have to handel the parts to much with taping and stuff.

The cylinder row is to be honed after the blasting and then I need to cook it again to get the oil off before paint. Thats why its not blocket off.
