Made some good progress over the weekend.

I wasn't happy with the ceramic blast media in the carbs, I've cleaned, flushed, cleaned and flushed - yet still more was coming out - but as it was getting less and less, I decided with no other sets available to press on and fit them anyway.

Ign timing was set half way in the window - everything double checked - remote fuel tank filled - choke on - prodded the button.....

Two turns and she was away :D

No Oil leaks.

Clutch works.

I was worried about the gearbox as you can't test all the gears without the darn thing running, no issues whatsoever - all gears are available - silky smooth selection.

:hoo :hoo :hoo :hoo :hoo :hoo :hoo

Only a few issues -

Generator doesn't work.
Stop light comes on with the lights.
No1 cylinder running very rich.
No2 running a tad lean
No3 running rich
No4 running very lean - and popping back
Carb balance not too bad but needs tweeking.
Dyna disc needs filing to get more range, sensors need synchronising
Airbox front insert has seen better days, its warped and distorts the No4 inlet rubber.

On the whole a great day :D

So Winter was it's usual unkind self, after many days freezing my butt off in the garage the cause of No4 popping back was traced to a slight bend in the inlet valve, during set up running there had been a slight ticking that I was sure seemed to be getting louder, I measured the valve clearance and it had gone out a tad since first shimming - 265 from a 260, I re-shimmed it and after ten mins running it was obvious something was still wrong - a compression test showed No4 to be a little lower than the others - a leak down test confirmed the Inlet valve wasn't seating properly - Bugger!

Took the head off and sure enough - very slight bend in the inlet valve, replaced the valve and another gasket later we were back together and running - result!

Started back again with the ignition timing, still couldn't get enough scope despite much filing of the holes in the dyna disc :??

Out with the air ginder - removed about a mill out of each hole. Plugs out Dial Indicator in to set TDC, turned the motor with a spanner - marked TDC - swapped the Indicator to No2 - turned the motor with the spanner to check timing marks for No2 - spot on - result!

Plugs in and a quick prod of the starter and 'CLUNK' motor came to a dead stop after half a revolution - spanner on the crank - it would turn one way but not the other.
Fished in the plug holes with a magnet and out of No2 cylinder came the end of the Dial Indicator

Hoping to have got away with it - plugs back in and - NO! - ran on 3 cylinders - FARK!

Measured the valve shims - No2 Exhaust shim needed to be about 2mm bigger!! - Bugger - Bugger! - Bugger!!

Head off - yet again - No2 exhaust valve now resembled a banana

So after battling bad luck and the freezing temperatures in the garage - weeks waiting for Debbens to send the last gasket - we now have 2 new valves - 4 more new shims in the collection and I've wasted 2 expensive one piece gaskets.... but we now have great compression across all cylinders - and the ignition timing is now sorted.

Fitted the ally cam bungs as I was of the opinion the black rubber/steel originals looked like POO! as they wouldn't sit flush.

Still getting nowhere fast with the carbs, despite more and more flushing and ultrasonic cleaning and flushing the bloody blast media is still not totally removed from the galleries - I think it's time to admit defeat and order some new carbs...

Still can't get the generator to work... farking spaghetti....

Paint work has been sent off - couldn't make my mind up on how to get it done - while down the bike park on Sunday the guys were of the opinion to go with black with a purple sheen, using original copy decals and a heavy lacquer - Sorted then!

Paintwork fitted - electrical gremlins chased out - she rolled out the garage on Sunday under it's own steam.

The sun was shining, summer had officially arrived, it's a shame the replacement saddle had not arrived from the states in time for the first photo shoot.

The brake light fail idiot light still comes on with the brake light - this could be due to using a 5/21w stop tail bulb instead of the manual recommendation of 8/27w - anyone know?

The generator not working issue was a puzzle as when I'd sorted the backfeeding issue on the lighting circuit - it was working.

Carbs are better but still no good in the mid range, it's a shame to admit defeat on the originals but ceramic cleaning was a bad idea - new carbs are on the way.

The paintwork isn't perfect and not identical to the factory original - but it looks ok.

Took it out for a couple of miles around the local airfield, the new pads are going to take some bedding in! apart from the mid range miss fire she ran smooth and strong - handling was great - super comfy ride.

Mot this week.

Really nice job. I'm glad to see this as I have a 900 ltd and theses bikes in this condition are very rare and have extremely nice lines, dare I say it they were pretty much sneered at in recent years.
I have std Z bars on my ltd now which makes it a lot more easy to ride. The original swept back bars made for an interesting and hairy ride
Well done :)

Cheers guys, I know the Ltd is not to everyone's taste - but it's flattering for you guys to appreciate my work.

Sailed through its 1st UK Mot today.

I've now got a few weeks of polishing till Allens send the new carbs, hopefully the new saddle will arrive soon.

Hoping to get it registered in time to see some summer action - please be kind DVLA!
