Opinions wanted ~ Mikuni versus Keihin carbs

#1 PostAuthor: wild_zed » Tue Oct 02, 2012 6:16 pm

Looking for some sage advice and wise council

I am about to pull the trigger and order a set of smooth bores.

What is the consensus as to which carb is best suited for road use on the Z1000J with Wiseco big bore kit and APE cams

The Mikuni Flat Slide Smooth Bore 34mm kit ref RS34-D21 K

or the

The Keihin Flat Slide Smooth Bore 35mm kit ref CR35

I have Keihin 31mm CRS on my Z1000A2, with 1075 wiseco big bore kit, ported Z1000J head, kent cams.

The bike runs really well, apparently they can be a devil to set up.
Some folk on here do not like the Keihin CRS carbs because of this.

Debben performance in Ringwood set the carbs up. I understand the larger the carbs you fit, the harder they are to tune for low revs.

Give Ray a bell at debben performance, or send him an e-mail for advice.

Mikuni RS carbs are good - easy to tune, parts easy to get, lots about and perform well over a wide range of engine demands - also a bit cheaper than CR's
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

I found the 34s very hard to get right "down low", that's why I now use 29mm flatslides from the very first GSX-R and couldn't really notice a difference, when it comes to top-end.

Maybe one day, I'll chuck them on the lathe and bore them to 31 or 32mm...

So, am I correct in assuming that the Mikuni are easier to set up and maintain??

As Z-enterprises have offered me a good price on a set of 34mm Mikuni's

Not necessarily, but jets, needles and other spare are easier to come by and there's more experience shared on the net, when it comes to those carbs.

Cheers,
Greg
