Chemical Blacking or Zinc plating black passivate

#1 PostAuthor: GPRD » Mon Oct 01, 2012 7:33 pm

Can anyone recommend the best way to go. I'm wanting to 're-black' all the nuts and bolts on the GPZ750R1 project, and I was going to chemical black them, but I was told today that that will give little or no corrosion protection, and that I should find someone to zinc plate them with black passivate.
Anyone got any experience they would like to pass on on this issue?
Cheers

I used black passivate zinc on my kh400 special. All the rearsets, kickstart and nuts and bolts were done that way.I used it mostly because it looked good and was cheap!...It has lasted pretty well and has only faded a little over the past couple of years.

Black chromate is now banned I think you will find, due to being carcinogenic (I think that is the correct spelling) this would have given a good corrosion protection.

Black passivate,on the other hand does not give the corrosion protection ( I think it ranges between 70 hours - 240 hrs.

I may be wrong here but the possible way to go would be to have the parts zinc plated, then black passivate.

Sorry, I meant get them zinc plated first, then black passivated.

Do those people do small private jobs?

Yes, I read that stuff was banned, I hadn't heard of it anyway!

I must say, I do like your bike.
I looks like Zinc plating with black passivate is the way to go.

Well thats convinced me!
You must of spent plenty of time blasting, its not a quick job, (unless you have a top compressor).
Can you tell me, do you have to passivate it immediately after plating? What I'm getting at is, if I sent my stuff to a local plater (they don't do black passivate due to water condition) could I black passivate it a day or two after?
Cheers

I am sure you have to passivate right after plating before it starts to oxidise,
Yes It takes alot of time to do, first clean and degrease each part, then blast them to take off rust and old plating, degrease, acid pickle then plate , followed by passivate,

I've spoken to some platers and yes, I have to passivate straight after plating, so, looks like a lot of work for me!

Thanks for all the input.
