RD400 advice

A friend of mine has been offered this RD400, one owner 9300 miles from new, been off the road since 2005, original bill of sale, all MOT's, toolkit etc - £4000.

Any of you know enough about RD's to say if that seems a good buy?

Top money i would say,but if all orignal.?
Would need to be mostly orignal parts no repro bits
Uk bike with matching numbers
engine rebuilt ? with genuine parts etc etc
but it looks nice
pic is my Rd 400 reasonable nick uk bike matching numbers 4 owners
I would say it was worth £2300 ish hope this helps

Nice looking bike: I would love one.
There is a good article re RD 400's (Vs. GT380 & KH400) in this months Practical Sportsbike. They quote "Minters" as having a current market value of upto £4k: so the price looks realistic for the bike being offered.

That is a 'D' model with points ignition. Later 'E' and 'F' models (electronic ignition and footrests mounted on frame rather than underslung below silencers) are probably slightly more sought after but if all bits are original and mint with matching frame and engine numbers it's about on the money. I think the earlier 350's are better looking and better value but I'm biased. Lots of used parts for 350's on e-bay.com as well unlike the 400's !!

That said, as with any old smoker, you will have to invest a couple o' quid in things like new crankshaft seals (they will surely stick to the crank) and probably some other minor things... But deffo do the crankshaft seals or you will have endless "fun" sorting the jetting out and wondering, why on plug is always sooty and your gearbox oil decreases constantly.
