too many early Z1 heads???

#1 PostAuthor: malmojoe » Mon May 14, 2012 8:35 am

I have been looking for an early Z1 head for my bike and know that there is no O ring groove and that the bosses where the vacuum take offs are still there in the casting - and not there in the Z1000 head - even theough the O ring has dissappeared.

Dave Marsdens book says that the O ring was introduced about 14000 or something, so that should make the earlier heads pretty scarce, but there seems to be a lot of later heads (78 and so on) in USA which also have no O ring and the bosses still in the casting. What are they from and are they really tha same as the early Z1 heads or not?

clarity much papreciated before I waste more money :??

MalmoJoe, I think you may be confusing the groove in the head with the groove in the barrels. There is no 0-ring groove in the head. It's an easy mistake. Have a look at Zed1015's photo of the barrels (your posting... "Can you identify this piston?"

I'm not sure if they still had the o-ring groove in the barrels of the Z1000-A2, however, the Z1000-A1 had the groove in the barrels. all Z1ooo's had no boss for vacuum nipples.

Cheers Garn, I was thinking that it would be an engineering nightmare to match up those grooves  ..

So, all the 900 heads are the same as mine and anyone will do ???

some z1000s and z1rs have the boss castings for the vacuum take offs , i also have some z900s ,some with the casting ,some without .i have also seen a head without the boss but with the narrow outer fins .you dont honestly think they just had the one mould for all the heads cast .
