Steve's Z750 Twin Cafe Build

#1 PostAuthor: 750steve » Mon May 07, 2012 9:41 pm

Ok guys, i thought i'd better throw up a thread somewhere about my build. TBH its nearly completed now so the final pics won't be going up until its finished. I'll update the thread gradually but only cos im a lazy git & cant be bothered adding all the pics at once to Photobucket!!

Well here goes!! I bought the bike in October 2011 & it was in OK condition, for what i wanted it was pretty much perfect. I has set some requirements like it HAD to be a twin, big CC, wire wheels & chain drive..........i kinda liked kawasaki's so this fitted the bill. Besides, the guy selling it really needed the room so i picked it up for reasonable money.

These are the only pics i have of it, they're from the advert. I wish i had taken some more but you get the idea. I was disappointed in a few things like the 'Kawasaki' stickers on the tank & i suspected a few things about that (more on it later) but there aint many of those in Northern Ireland so i picked it up anyway.

First mission was to get her going, im a complete greenhorn at these bikes & the seller said it needed a new starter solenoid, he was wrong. I got a new one & still no go, eventually i found it was the starter button.........but there was more than that! I read alot about the starter clutch needing rebuilt on these bikes so i ordered a rebuild kit, 2 weeks later it arrived & i rebuilt the starter clutch......an easy enough but frustrating job!......still no go!! The starter was making a funny noise (see video) & when i took it apart to rebuild it i found the big gear inside the starter nose was rotating instead of staying put, i used bearing seal to fix it as the small 'key' to hold it in place was mangled.

Eventually i got her going, no way was i throwing money into it until i heard how it sounded, done a compression test as well & all looked ok. It popped a bit from the left cylinder & still does but i hope to sort that soon when i find the cause, idle was high & thats kinda sorted as well now.

I removed the engine & carbs. As i was going to be using Pod's i knew i'd need to rejet. I done some searching & found i might need to go up maybe 4 sizes on the main & up a size on the pilot. I know this is pretty general so i'll start there when the bike is up & running & adjust as necessary. Luckily there are some good sources in the UK for these carb parth & jets. When i was this far the carbs were dismantled for an ultrasonic clean & vapour blast. Thankfully the guy that does this over here really knows about bikes & carbs, he was able to tell me i needed some minor replacement items that i didn't even know about http://eavb.net/default.aspx.

The engine was also sent to be Soda Blasted, i used this method as i didn't have to break the engine down into individual components.

While it was out valve clearances were checked & the engine had a general checkover. A small crack in the left casing needed fixed as it was leaking some oil. When this is all finished & i get some spare cash i'll look about getting a replacement cover.

Sorry for not updating more but im sure you guys aren't too interested in non Z1 stuff but here you go anyway!

Its taken me about 8 months to get my bike like this. I've still some things to do like fit a chain, new tyres & redo the rearset mounts but i'm pretty much there. Then it'll be getting into getting it going well & im sure im gonna have some teething problems.

Pretty much EVERYTHING has been modified on the bike, some things more complicated than others

Pics are a bit poo as i couldnt find my camera & used my phone but you get the idea

I'm not usually into the cafe racer look but that bike looks fantastic Steve. I really like the white wheels and fork legs. Beautiful.
